In preparation for the start of the 2014 World Cup this week, we've already given you some great suggestions on the best ways to watch the World Cup on your phone or tablet. Now I thought I'd give you a quick rundown of the best football game apps for Android. We'll kick things off (see what I did there) with...

FIFA14

The latest in EA's unrelentingly popular football series, FIFA14 is probably the most comprehensive football game available for Android, featuring 33 leagues, over 600 licensed teams, and more than 16,000 players. Despite winning “worst company in the America” two years in a row, EA narrowly avoided the accolade in 2014, and, in fairness, a more accomplished football sim (simulation game) is hard to find. If nothing else these guys deliver on production values! Just make sure your phone/tablet is powerful enough to run it.

Flick Shoot

For casual thrills, Flick Shoot presents a nonthreatening introduction to football games. It's as easy as it sounds – sweep your finger across your device screen to kick the ball. It has a number of different game modes and simple user-interface, definitely one of the better apps of its ilk.

Real Football 2013

Closest in design to FIFA, Gameloft’s popular football sim provides a great alternative to EA's beast. Manage every aspect of your team from developing your club’s facilities, hiring new staff members, dealing with sponsors and more. It's another game that will tax your mobile graphics processing, but on the right device, it could be a winner.

Fluid Soccer

Finding it difficult to play games like FIFA and Real Football on a small screen display? Fluid Soccer might be the solution you're looking for! Favoring strategic management of your team, rather than quick reactions, Fluid Soccer will appeal to those searching for something with a more tactical focus.

Football Kicks

Similar to Flick Shoot, Football Kicks is another easy to get-to-get-to-grips-with screen flicker. The developers boast about purchasable kits and extra stadiums on the Play Store, but just ignore all that guff and play it for the cheap thrills.

@FlynnMccoy, Yeah there have been tons of studies about the benefits of playing games including, as you rightly said, improved memory (I know the Game Boy classic "Tetris" has been used in these studies quite often).

Apparently they can make you happier too :D

I'm not a big fan of FIFA14 personally, just because of my own unique tastes. I like simpler games without the whole management aspect like Fluid Soccer, but that's just me.
