Boulder Dash®-XL™

Loie Favre (translation)

Boulder Dash®-XL™ is full of interesting innovations. This game certainly sinks its roots into the old puzzle game from the 90s. That being said, this isn't a retro game.

You'll discover all the new elements brought to Boulder Dash®-XL™ in today's app test review.

Features & Use

Test Device: Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Applicable for Android 4.2.2 and higher
Root: no
Modifications: yes

As soon as the application starts, you will have to download 36 MG of data, therefore it's preferable to connect to WiFi rather than 3G. The permissions and installation of Boulder Dash®-XL™ have no problems of any kind. The central characters of the game are two robots named Rockford and Crystal. The player must guide them through tunnels while collecting diamonds until you reach the level exit. On the way, you'll be faced with unexpected obstacles and enemies that obstruct your path.

The two robots move blocks or rocks and free up new passages, thus avoiding the enemies using timely maneuvers and direction changes. Many factors within this game can be planned in advance, in order to avoid enemy trajectories. Boulder Dash®-XL™ offers several game modes:

  • Points Challenge
  • Enigma Mode
  • Arcade Mode
  • Zen Mode
  • Retro Mode

In challenge mode, you need to collect as many diamonds as possible in 4 levels. The time will be limited and the player will have to find the exit as fast as possible. The enigma mode is essentially the same, only without time restrictions. Arcade is the classic progressive mode that goes from level to level. You can repeat the levels as much as you want in zen mode, where you discover all the hidden secrets. Retro Mode allows you to give the game that old 8 bit look, which made it so famous in arcades.

You're able to select the specific strength level for your robot characters, which is also enhanced during the course of the game. You can also add more than one game account, in order to experiment with more than one mode at a time as well as challenge friends.

Bottom Line

Boulder Dash®-XL™ is a fun game that you can easily learn to play. It offers different game modes suitable for every situation. Although certain types of games are a little too easy, like zen mode, others like retro mode surprised me in a positive way. Therefore, I recommend this game to all puzzle fans.

Screen & Controls

Boulder Dash®-XL™ has good graphics and a high-end design. The menu, designed using the retro graphics, responds well to the touch screen. The controls are customizable in the options and everything worked as it should.

Speed & Stability

Boulder Dash®-XL™ worked stably during the entire course of the test.

Price/Performance Ratio

Boulder Dash®-XL™ is available for 3.00 US dollars in the Google Play Store. The price is partially justified because the game offers 100 levels. That being said, I personally think it's a little too expensive since there are many free competitors in the app market.
