Custom firmware: Sense 5 for Galaxy S3

Kris Carlon (translation)

When buying a smartphone, it's not just about looks and the actual hardware device. The look and feel of the user interface is also an important factor for many. Anyone who has bought a Galaxy S3, but prefers the quite popular HTC Sense 5 visuals over Samsung's TouchWiz interface, can now finally get what they have secretly been hoping for.

The XDA Developers have struck again! A new custom firmware can now bring Sense 5 to your Galaxy S3. The HTC One firmware on Android 4.1.2 is used as a basis, so you will have to live without any 4.2-specific features if you flash this ROM. To make it clear: This isn't merely a visual theme, but an actual ROM. It is still a work in progress from the developer community, in beta stage only, so not yet perfect.

Important: until the software is in alpha stage, there will be some vigorous work done to it. In fact, there was a call out to all developers in the XDA Developers forum to participate in the work, so a 100 percent functional version should be ready soon. This means that we should soon see a stable HTC Sense 5 interface available for the Galaxy S3 for everyone.

Techys who want to help get the UI to this user-ready stage can check out the XDA Developers site. There is more detailed information available about the ROM there. Sense 5 would definitely have the predominantly very well behaved Galaxy S3 acting more serious and "dangerous." What do you think of the idea?

Well you're in luck if you wanted to get Sense 5 because there's a Sense 5 theme available for iPhone 5 too. It's not the actual ROM, as in the article above, but you can get a Sense 5/Windows Phone feel on your iPhone if that's of any interest to you. Just google ''sense 5 for iPhone'' and you should find it easily enough.

Hey Liam, well I'd be a bit sketched out by the reports we've been hearing about the 'stability' update for S3's (Android 4.1.2) that happened yesterday - there seems to be plenty of problems. Also, the Android 4.3 update seems to be causing a few problems on the devices that have it already as well, and many others just want to stick with 4.2.2, so which Android version you choose is up to you. If you want to get away from Android, go with CyanogenMod if you want lots of customization, or MIUI or Paranoid Android. But again, it all depends what you're looking for. Let us know what you go with!
