HTC Announces Several Upcoming Android Devices

by Douglas Carter on Feb 16, 2011 3:42:00 PM — read 1,240 times

Over the last few days at MWC, HTC was busy showing off their 6 new devices that run Android: the Flyer, Salsa, Chacha, Desire S, Incredible S, and Wildfire S. Within those devices are 3 Android devices we are familiar with, along with an Android Gingerbread tablet, and two “social phones” built around Facebook. Thanks to Engadget and MobileCrunch's footwork, we've got some good impressions on HTC's new offerings in the coming months.

The HTC Flyer is HTC's first tablet offering, and sports Android 2.4 Gingerbread with HTC Sense on top, tucked inside of an aluminum-unibody housing (like in the Legend.) The device features a 7” 1024 x 600 display, 1.5GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM, 5MP camera, 1.3MP front-facing camera, 4000mAh battery, and 32GB of internal storage (alongside microSD card expandability.)

The Flyer also comes with a stlyus which works with the capacitative touchscreen, and software called Scribe designed to make use of the stylus. Expect the device to be available in Q2. No word on a planned update to Honeycomb.

The Salsa and ChaCha resemble, design-wise, a regular Android candybar phone and a Blackberry-esque phone. Both have Android 2.4 installed, and a hardware Facebook button at the bottom of the device's front, which is context sensitive and has more than one function. Availability for Europe and Asia seems to be sometime in Q2.

The Salsa, being the more traditional Android design of the two, bears a strong resemblance to the HTC Legend. It features a 3.4” 480 x 320 HVGA display, 5MP camera (w/ LED flash), and a VGA front-facing camera.

The ChaCha has a landscape 2.6” 480 x 320 HVGA display, 5MP camera, and a hardware QWERTY keyboard. The case of the device has a slight curve to it, giving the phone a bit of a chin, like the HTC Hero and Legend.

The HTC Desire S, Incredible S, and Wildfire S are all refreshes of last year's devices, offering decent improvements in internal specs, and new case designs, and all 3 new handsets have done away with the optical trackpad from last year. The Incredible S and Desire S should be launching in mid-Q2 (May-June).

The Incredible S features Android 2.2, a 4” WVGA display, 1GHz CPU, 768MB of RAM, 8MP camera (w/ dual LED flash), 1.3MP front-facing camera, 1450mAh battery, and 1.1GB of internal storage.

The Desire S sports Android 2.4, a 3.7” WVGA display, 1GHz CPU, 768MB of RAM, 5MP camera (w/ single LED flash), 1450mAh battery, and 1.1GB of internal storage all fit into a single-piece aluminum housing like the Flyer and Legend.

The Wildfire S (which we saw pictured in a video last week) will thankfully get its display resolution bumped up from the problem-causing QVGA (320 x 240) up to 3.2” HVGA (480 x 320). The Wildfire S will also come with Android 2.4 and a 5MP camera.
