I got my new Desire a few days ago and am over the moon with it a very nice phone but wow the battery can run down very fast tho,i had a mess around and found if i do this it helps:

1 Goto menu and hit settings
2 Go to applications
3 Goto running services
4 Then shut from there the ones you are not useing

I found doing this helps, you can also goto the about phone and click Battery and open up the battery use and see whats useing the power.

Thanks for the good tips!

My battery runs out super quickly on my HTC Hero if I forget to turn off the Wi-Fi.

Hi Pete,

if you wanna have a deeper insight, what happens inside your handy, you can check out this nifty little app ...

http://vosotarius.dyndns.org/akkuinfo.apk

AkkuInfo.apk

it is just a shortcut to an already implemented but not exposed activity inside Android and will give you a much more detailed look at which app will run in background and how much cpu, network resources and so on it will grab.

Apps with high network traffic will drain your battery, also if you have your gps switched on all the time and there are apps running in the background whoch wil use this feature.

Basically: WIFI, GPS and 3G are battery killers at night time.

Do you reckon it is worth keeping it plugged in (either with the mains, or via the cable to the pc, or even via a charger for the car) even when fully charged?

like with most battery powered devices, i would guess that letting the battery run out and then recharging fully is better than having it hooked up all the time. that's how it is with laptops in any case.

i dunno whether htc is any different...

i would assume the same, i leave it off the charger until it gets into the red usually

If you take a look at common Li-Ion accu specs, it's nearly impossible to overload a modern accu. This is also what i realized over the last year with my G1.

In normal Workdays the G1 is not loaded, returning home i put it in the docking station which is connected to my Laptop all the Time. G1 is remaining there until next morning an the game starts again ... No accu damage since a year for now. Lifetime is same as if it has been fresh from store.

Be careful with replacement batteries from other manufacturers. I saw a story about a week ago that reviewed several replacement batteries from different companies (higher and standard mAh) that performed well below advertised performance. Be wary if they sell for cheap as well.
