Question about app sales models.
created on May 5, 2010 9:29:21 PM — modified on May 6, 2010 4:11:37 AM
Was wondering for those of you who have published some android apps, what sales model works best for you? Some people off a trial or demo version and a link to buy the full version. I personally don't like this option very much. What I've tried with my app Party Light is a free version (full version) that shows ads, and a paid version that doesn't have any ads. Often people who like the app will pay to have it without the ads. Also people are at least 100 times more likely to download an app that is free than one that costs even as low as $0.99. So you will get good exposure for your app. With the ad version your still making money, and if it gets lots of downloads you could make good money. And people get to view your full version, and often will buy it for without the ads. What models have you tried?

I've edited this post, since I thought it would be good to know from the people who buy and download apps, which they prefer? So, do most people absolutely hate apps with ads? Do you, prefer only to buy apps or only download free apps? What is the consumers view?

I personally don't like adds. I really appreciate tidy apps that aren't too busy or confusing. And, surprisingly, I like free apps :) But I'm willing to pay for one if it offers all the criteria I'm looking for and if it's gotten good reviews. Hope this helps.

if i felt like i absolutely needed an app an i had to pay, then i would. however, i haven't had to yet. i would probably have bought a racing / good flying game if i had a more powerful phone. ads are ok since im off the network usually.

Ok,

for me, ads are ok most of the time since i'm using most of the apps for just a very short period. This is due to the fact i don't use the Android for gaming purposes.
Nearly 95% of the apps i use and which i fetched from market are effeciency tools (Metal detector, gps-status, voice-recorder, and so on.) The other ones are free of adds. If they wouldn't free i think i would buy them if price is in range.

There is only one thing, if i really qould need an app and the price seems not to be in range, i simply would write this app myself, since i'm a developer :)

I published 1 app in the market since i got my G1 and pubished several nfty little tools here in on Androidpit, but none of my apps are payed apps. They're all free.

The way a developer chooses depend on what type of app he is publishing. A simple tool is only worth paying if it covers a really neccesary gap. Here it could be a good an veritable way for the developer to rely on a trial / payed version. If it is a game or something else i guess the add / paid way is the better. Depending on how good the product is.

I totally agree about ads in games, they can really be distracting from the game. But what about a game, that only shows ads on say the menu, and the gameplay part of the game is clear?

That would be agreeable to a lot more people. Ads while you play a game are distracting, so any way to minimize their negative impact while optimizing their exposure is a plus. I think what you have suggested is a good way to go about advertising.

Both my wife and find plenty of apps out there for "free" that do the same as paid apps do. Neither of us are bothered with the ads that go along with them so long as the ads are not too in you face. A small banner on the bottom seems be the least distracting. Neither of us is tempted to actually by an app and in that we are probably a minority. That's my 2¢.
