i have the message shortcut on my main home page on my phone and there have been a few times, like now, when there are now new message and it has the green circle with the one in it implying i have a new text message. How the hell can i get rid of this as turning the phone off and on again is a bit long winded.

Do you mean you want to get rid of the messaging widget? If so longpress on it (touch and hold for a couple secs.), then you can drag it to a trashcan icon at the bottom of the screen.

nope i just want to get it to refresh properly and stop saying there is a message when there isnt.

go to message settings and uncheck "notify me when there is a new/unread messages"

I think you are using handcent sms app for your texting.. if this is so.. if you update handcent sms you might need to remove widget from homescreen and then put it back on to fix problem.. Worked for me.
