Alternative app shops

Hi all,

Quick question - what's your experience, as developers/publishers, with shops alternative to Android Market? I'm talking about PocketGear/Handango/AnyOtherShopOutThere. Did you try selling your apps through aggregators like MetaFlow or operators' shops? Any recommendations?

Market lacks some key features, that's obvious, but in our case it generates 99% of total sales.

So waiting for your comments,

Cheers,

Tom

I have one of my apps on handago, but it hasn't generated very many sales at all. I also have one of my free apps at www.mobilerated.com, (i'm not sure if they have a paid android section) . Even though it's free it hasn't gotten many downloads. I will also be adding my apps to getjar.com I've had some j2me apps on there for years and they have gotten over 100k downloads over the years. I believe most android users rely only on the android market. I do think that other sites will be important as the average user learns theres other places to get apps. In my experience other shops haven't been very important right now, but I also believe they will grow soon.

@Jeremiah,
Thx for you reply. Did you try other options like operators' shops (ie. Orange in the UK & France)?

There's one I've used called SlideMe.. must download from http://SlideME.org/sam2.apk ..you can find the main website at http://slideme.org .. once installed.. it will show you all apps in market regardless of your phone's model. It will also tell you if the App is compatible with your phone as well. Make sure to inable: "allow install of non-market applications" in "Settings" under "Applications". Note: it works a little different then the Android market (it doesn't autoinstall after downloading).. click on an app to download.. then once downloaded.. slide down the top taskbar on your phone.. then click on downloaded app to choose to install.

I haven't tried any operators. I have made some j2me games before and it was so hard for an independent developer to get their apps on the operators sites that I gave up with them.
