More niggles on Desire that I have found inc. Crap keyboard,

I am finding I want to chuck phone out window and indeed did have it fly out my pocket crossing busy road to work this morning, though luckily I had nice silicone case and screen protector on so it is unscathed but... I can't type on the default keyboard portrait styley! It is sooooo frustrating coming from a candy bar SE K770i where hard keys and predictive text were deep in settings and not easily touched while typing! I now find I can't even type a simple text or browse internet without screaming at said phone! I looked on market yesterday and found app's like 'Thick fingers', Big Keys, Uber keyboard, which am trialling now and seems pretty damn good as no stupid predictive text button to press. Anyone got any other good suggestions and inc paid apps that they swear by for keyboards? Also is it a bug but that XT predicative text button on default keyboard seems to just change back to ABC willy nilly during a text or browse when in same form field and why can't you store symbol characters in the dictionary???? like your email address or just word's like 'isn't' or ' they're'? Also it doesn't seem to understand words like 'isn't' like when you get to adding the comma mid text, it thinks you ended the word then changes to ABC and writes jibberish! It makes me so mad! Surely its a bug! I always heard people saying they couldn't get on with touch screens but always thought being technical I'd be ok. Thoughts anyone?

Have you tried "Compact QWERTY" setting?

Open some program like email or web browser so you can show on-screen keyboard..

In portrait view press the on-screen key that looks like a gear on the bottom left of the on-screen keyboard. Then choose keyboard type.. QWERTY / Compact QWERTY / or even Phone Keypad.

Also when typing words with hypens.. don't manually type the hypen.. only type the letters.. auto-complete will add the hypen for you.

Another trick is when in Compact QWERTY (or Phone Mode) keyboard: click the # button, then go to screen 3 of 4 (3/4) to add smileys easily. :) (2/2 on full QWERTY)

Have you tried using the calibration tool in the keyboard settings? I'm not sure if my keyboard is the same as the Desire's but I don't have the problems your describing with the auto complete. I don't have to press the word prediction button usually. As I type it shows a few predictions, the more I type the closer it gets to the word I want, when it highlights the word I need i just press space and it completes the word. Or if it doesn't predict the word I need I just keep typing till I've typed the whole word. For me it doesn't change it if it doesn't know what word I'm typing. I'm using the Full Qwerty view.

Which keyboard were you using originally? Is there an HTC keyboard that is different from the regular Android keyboard?

Phones like My HTC Eris with only on-screen virtual keyboards give you the extra portrait view keyboard layouts:

"Compact QWERTY / Phone Keypad"

I know that the Motorola Droid for instance doesn't have the Compact QWERTY option.

Not sure if it's is a HTC thing or if other Android phones with on-screen only virtual keyboards have same options.

Also there is a Tutorial to "Learn about how to enter text" within Settings...

  • Menu
  • Settings
  • Language & keyboard
  • Touch Input
  • Tutorial

You will also find the Calibration tool within "Text input" (that Jeremiah mentioned above) on the same screen the "Tutorial" option is found.
