Freeing up space on internal SD card!
created on Aug 23, 2010 3:01:10 PM
I was having problems with the amount of space on my phone, so I took a look around on the phone's SD card and found a folder with over 5GB of files, thumbnails of the images in my phone's image/video gallery. I was stunned to say the least. I looked up to see if anyone else had found the same thing, and I found some people like me, and they said it was safe to delete the folder that I was wondering about. Here is the file location: My Computer\GT-I9000\Phone\Android\data\com.cooliris.media\cache\local-image-thumbs I deleted the whole folder, and unplugged my phone. It works soo much better now, and the phone recreated the folder, but it is around 2-3MB in size now, so not an issue anymore. I hope that helps anyone out there having trouble freeing up space on their phone's internal SD card

I had the same problem and would like to know how I can avoid that the folder local-image-thumbs is being recreated again? Which settings do I have to change? Thanks a lot! Unfortunately, I do not think the problem is easily fixable by us (consumers). Due to the fact that the phone continues to recreate the folder, I would say that the folder is need in order to maintain the Gallery media browser function of the phone. Rooting the phone and installing a custom ROM without the Gallery app may be the only way to avoid dealing with this problem in the future.

Yes! i actually had the same problem i got pictures where i dont know where my phone got it..there was actually a point where my phone got so slow and i dont know why and its because of that!
but one thing i do to clear space is to clear cache from applications one by one it saved me a huge because i got shocked why apps are eating alot of space and discovered that it was becasue of the cache especially the dolphin browser literally ate up my internal memory -__-
after clearing all the caches my phone got faster plus almost half of the space was saved.

Joe Herczeg Really useful info.
Although I use my i9000 two weeks, I consider your advice. Thx, Joe I had it new for about 1 month when I found the problem, so you may already be on the way to your own 5 GB folder as well.

Can this be done from within the phone? I can't get my computer to see the phone to be able to do it from there.

Well, to do it on your computer, I think you have do install Samsung Kies (not fun), but you can try and use the integrated file explorer within the phone in order to delete the file. I haven't tried before, and I don't have the phone anymore, so I can't say.

Yo man, great I found some people who loves to clear useless memory space like me.
I'm using gaxaly s2, and under: . com.cooliris.media .. cache ... geocodercache ... hiresimagecache ... localalbumcache ... localimagethumbs ... localmetacache ... localskipcache ... localvideothumbs ... picasathumbs
Save to Delete them all?
since you said : "and the phone recreated the folderand the phone recreated the folder" I guess its safe, anyway it feels good to revive an old thread...

Those should be safe to delete, I think.

I hope that helps anyone out there having trouble freeing up space on their phone's internal SD card Huge thanks for this post. I was having repeated problems with forced closures and lagging apps, couldn't understand what the deal was. Was all ready to reformat internal sd card and saw this. I didn't use your advice specifically, but it did point me in the right direction - I think. I discovered a MISC file with nearly 3,000 files in it that was over 4G. I looked through those files (I am NOT an expert) and couldn't identify what I could and couldn't keep. So on the premise that I could rebuild if necessary with a new ROM, I went for it. I selected all and deleted. I did this through the phone's filemanager, (my Brontosaurus 386 won't recognise my SGS1 and I WON'T have Kies). The phone deleted a whole load of files (took a few minutes too) but it kept others. I will assume for now that these are the necessary files. PLEASE DON'T DO THIS ON MY ADVICE!! I've only just done this and haven't seen the results of performance yet, but it did give me a full 2g+ more space. I will test and update. Wish me luck!
