I trust Motorola's announced dates more than any other source, considering that Motorola are the ones creating the update. I do believe that the update is coming in Q4, based on the last Motorola timeline I saw.

good good.... i mean theres basicly no difference between the handsets other than the wvga and cdma or whatever so it would make sense to get the update

In my opinion, definitely. Unfortunately, it seems that Motorola doesn't exactly share our opinion, and don't feel a need to upgrade many of their devices to Android 2.1 or Android 2.2

Well, you can start looking for Android 2.2 ROMs for the Milestone and once you have found one, root your phone and then install the ROM.

If there is an unofficial Android 2.2 Milestone ROM that should work for your phone somewhere on the internet, I believe you will have to root. Once the official update get's leaked, I believe that root is no longer required (and is likely not recommended.)
