I did some googleing and found this: http://theunlockr.com/2010/09/20/how-to-root-the-htc-desire-unrevoked-method/
this is supposed to work for Android 2.2 HTC Desire. Let us know if it works for you. If that is the method you tried and couldn't get it working, do you know why it didn't? In addition, if you fill out the phone information in your forum profile, that can always be helpful.

Well, it's good to hear you got it fixed finally. What kind of stuff are you doing now that your phone is rooted?
