WIFI access problems after Froyo update

WIFI access problems after Froyo update
created on Dec 16, 2010 9:43:43 AM
Dear all,

after updating my phone to Froyo (DXJPA), i have started to get problems to access to various public wifi hotspots / wep secured.
The phone can recognize the existing wifi signal, it shows "obtaining ip address" and finally fails after a minute.
WEP password has been entered, but it's still not able to access.

I had no access problems under the 2.1 system... What happened? How can i fix it? China GPRS/EDGE speed sucks big time.

Thanks for your help. regards, Tom.

This was an official update from your carrier that was pushed onto your handset, right? Not some ROM you downloaded and installed yourself? Did you buy the handset in China, or did you bring it with you on vacation/business?

Hi.

The upgrade was the official Samsung update downloaded via Samsung's Kies application.
The phone was bought in Singapore.

Have you checked Samsung Kies to see if there is another update already available? Maybe one to fix your problem? If not, you may want to consider performing a factory reset of your phone, returning it to how it came out of the box, software-wise.

No new update yet available...
I hoped to avoid a factory reset.

Because of losing data saved on the phone? Didn't the recent update to Android 2.2 do that anyways?

Nope, all data and apps stayed on the phone... Nothing was lost.

I don't know what else to recommend. I've heard of GPS problems before on the Galaxy S handsets, but never Wi-Fi problems. Are the networks you are trying to access only accessible through a MAC address?

This website suggests using "WiFi Fixer" to diagnose and maybe find a solution to the problem.
Someone in the Androidforums suggested "go into wi fi settings -> menubutton -> advanced -> wi fi sleep policy and check what its set to."

I found a solution to my problem...just in case that anyone else faces a similar problem.

when going into the wifi options "advanced" settings, you are able to set-up "a static IP" configuration...at least Samsung Galaxy S has this option.
i looked up the current wifi ip/dns/gateway numbers...i inserted them into the static ip settings and turned off & on the wifi on my phone and then i got magically connected to my favorite coffee-shop wifi network. the phone even remembers the settings when you leave/come back, wow.

shamefully, i had to use my ipad to get all the network numbers which are needed for the settings.

Well, at least you found the answer. I never had that problem when I was using a Samsung Galaxy S, but then again, the problem likely stems from the ROM itself.

Go to...

-menu
-settings
-Wireless & Networks
-Wi-Fi settings

Then hit the phones "Menu" button while in the Wi-Fi settings screen..

You will see two options pop-up: Scan or Advanced
