HTC Desire HD — Synchronising

I'm having trouble synchronising my Desire to my pc. Its connected properly, USB is debugged and Status reads "Connected"! You'd imagine everything would be ok right? Nah. The HTC icon still has a red and white X on it and a window flashes up reading "Unable to copy contacts from PIM." On top of this I'm total denser! Can someone help?

I always wonder why people with Google based Android handset's would need to sync with pc; afterall, it automatically syncs with gmail (your contacts etc). Then again I guess if you use Microsoft Outlook etc it might be necessary.

What is it you are trying to sync.. and how are you trying to do so?
