As Steven says, it depends.
But on most phones with HTC Sense long-pressing the Home button allows you to jump between up to 6 apps without shutting any of them down. |

I use "QuickDesk" it's one of the must have app's in my opinion. Once installed you long press the search button and a semi-transparent screen pops up which will hold 20 app icons and/or your favorite widgets.
