Alernative android markets worth it ?
created on Jul 21, 2011 12:08:53 PM
Hi all- I'm new to the game, and I've added my app to a number of Alternative Android Market-like sites. I haven't seen much increase in downloads and have had very little interaction ? Has anyone else out there had any success with these sites ? Which ones ? Thanks so much for your input ! Brad (app = Snapanda.com)

HI Brad, I've uploaded my apps to a few different sites. Most of them are not worth your time/effort to upload all the content required. I've found the google market gets the most downloads, but also a few of the alternative sites can be worth it. The ones I've found to be the best are Android Pit, GetJar, SlideMe and Handango. Most of the other sites I've found to be a waste of time.

Thanks Jeremiah
I've hit the same sites you've mentioned. I've gone past there as well, and like you I haven't seen much return for my effort. Will continue to observe and If I find anything attractive, I'll post back here. Cheers, b

Please do. What ways are you advertising your apps? Have you found any good ways to get the apps known to users? I've been trying to find a way to cross-promote with other developers. I have ad-mob in some of my apps, was wondering if there is any sites you know of that will let developers trade house ads?

@Jeremiah I don't know of any admob trade programs like that. Great idea for game developers! Our app is a different market, and though it does have ads, they're only for our other e-learning apps. We'll keep it in mind, though.
Haven't done any "external advertising" per se, but as far as promotion goes, I do a lot on twitter/facebook. I've also sought after reviews from other big Android sites. Since our app is tech-cool and different, it's gotten articles in Gizmodo, TechCrunch, Android Central, Android Guys, Android Tapp, AndroInica... quite a bit, and yet it hasn't gone "viral". Prob because we're still in Beta w/ limited functionalities compared to traditional dictionary apps. Keep chugging away ;-)
Nice 2 connect and keep me posted on your efforts and I'll do the same.
@Steven thanks, heading off to do that now. Really appreciate what you all have put together here at Android Pit. Best reception and interactivity I've found yet on the web à la Android. Cheers !
