MetroPCS Unlimited? Alternative to Verizon and AT&T?

So everyone keeps talking about how expensive data is becoming in the States, but I still keep on seeing these MetroPCS ads in the subway that offer $40 a month everything included rates? why aren't people flooding over to them? is there a catch? is there service really bad or something? just wondering.
