Yes, this is possible but not with the stock android browser.
You can switch to "desktop" mode in Dolphin Browser™ HD for example...

@luhu cool and does that mean I'd get access to a non-mobile site as well? I've never really thought about it but I think having the option would be cool as well.

It's like browsing from your PC when you select "desktop" as user agent.
And you can easily switch back to mobile mode and surf in mobile sites. There is also a Add On providing a small icon for one-click-switching between the modes (in the toolbar on the right side). It's name is "Desktop Toggles".
