Ad-funded apps - how do you use them?

Just wondering about how people use free, ad-funded apps that they download. If you're using a very good/useful free app, do you sometimes click on ads that don't really interest you as a way of providing an income stream for the developer? I'd be interested in hearing people's thoughts.

It's something I do occasionally if I'm using a free app that I really like, as it makes me feel like I'm giving something back (though evidently it doesn't help the advertisers).

What's your take on this?

Honestly, the ads are usually so unhelpful that I almost never click on them. I also get super irritated if the ad is causing my app to connect to the Internet and eating into my data plan. I usually uninstall those kinds of apps.
