Samsung Galaxy S3 — Useless email in text contacts

Please be patient, the s3 is the first smartphone I own.

When I open the contacts list to select multiple recipients for a text message, on top of my phone contacts I get ALL gmail contacts that have ever appeared in my email account (1000+) which effectively makes it impossible to find anything.

Trying to click on the options buttons yields nothing.
Is there any way to filter away the email contacts from the phone contacts?
