Metal detector app uses the magnetic sensor in your phone to detect metals ( iron, cobalt nickel).It beeps when the meter goes high.
You can also use it to scan for bugs ( mics, camera ) if you are afraid someone is spying on you.

It works great on my evo! Try it or yourself. It probably depends a lot on what type of phone you have.
