Summary

For a long time, my favorite program for Android was Locale. This app made it possible for me to set up profiles linked to the time of day and my location. So when I drove to work in the morning, my phone’s sound settings were normal, and Bluetooth and WLAN were switched off. Locale then switched my profile, so that once I was at the office the settings turned silent, and Bluetooth and WLAN were switched on. The app costs $9,99 nowadays, and because that’s a bit too pricey for me I started looking into possible alternatives, which is how I came across Timeriffic. What does Timeriffic have to offer and can it replace Locale?

Today’s test review was written by Kevin Taron.

Features & Use

Section rating:

At first glance, Timeriffic comes across as somewhat confusing. Once you’ve spent a bit of time trying to get the hang of it, you figure out which functions Timeriffic has to offer, though.

This is the best way to use Timeriffic:

• • First off, you set up a profile (e.g. work)
• • You can set up different actions, edit, or delete them within this profile
• • Once you’ve set up an action, you can decide when it should be executed (e.g. Monday-Friday 7am)
• • You can set up the action in detail (you can also choose not to change any of the options)
o o Ringer on/off
o o Vibration on/off/Vibration for messaging only/Vibration for calls only
o o Volume in %
o o Message notification in %
o o WIFI on/off
o o Screen brightness in %
o o Flight mode on/off
o o Bluetooth (not yet supported)
o o If APNdroid is available you can choose if Dataroaming should be on/off
• • You can then set up more actions (e.g. Monday-Friday 5pm), and then change your settings accordingly

So, for instance, you could set up a profile that switches your phone to silent, switches WLAN off, etc. every morning before work, and as soon as you finish work everything is switched back on.

Once you’ve chosen which other profiles you need (flight mode on at night and off when you wake up in the morning, and so on), you can set them up according to your preferences so that you won’t have to do anything manually any longer. No more embarrassing interruptions by callers during meeting, just because you forgot to change your profile.

There are still a few options missing from the profile configuration details: there’s no display timeout, lock screen, or Bluetooth (mentioned above).
Also, it isn’t possible to select profiles manually, so that you can use the set up whenever you like, and not just at the designated time. And there’s no Widget, either.

Bottom line:

Timeriffic is alright, and to a certain extent it does live up what it’s meant to be able to provide. And although it works fine, I’m still missing a few things. I can’t help but compare it to Locale, and unfortunately Timeriffic just can’t compete with it. Too bad!

Screen & Controls

Section rating:

The entire app is a bit too busy with graphics and colorful text blurbs. I had to get used to the app’s design, but once I did I found that it pretty much does what it’s meant to.

You’ll find a display in the upper margin that lets you know when the last changes were made, as well as when the next action will be taken (the details of the action are also shown).
Profiles and action set-ups are next. There you’ll find an overview of different profiles and the action details. It isn’t possible to shift around action details amongst the different profiles, unfortunately.

Controls are relatively simple. To change an action all you need to do is click on it; to delete it you have to press on it for a longer time. You can rename or delete profiles by clicking on them for a long time.

Speed & Stability

Section rating:

Timeriffic didn’t crash during the testing phase. No problems to report—all the actions were carried out at the correct times.

Price/Performance Ratio

Section rating:

Timeriffic can be downloaded for free from the Android Market.

Overall a pretty good app.. I use it to auto sleep ring and auto dim my Eris at night then return to normal in the morning.. also I have a weekly meeting I attend for a hour.. and its set to vibrate only for that hour. I don't care how it looks... once setup.. you never really need to look at it any way.

looks a bit of a mess.

Definitely needs a makeover.

the screen is way too crowded and disorienting...

i agree with the overall low rating. the app really needs to improve on its looks.

Galaxy Nexus jelly bean I have had this app for years and love it, however it just doesn't seem to work well with my new phone. I am going to have to look for a replacement app. Too bad as this has been a great app, and free also.

Must have app Never write reviews, but with this app I felt I had to. Forget all those other battery saving apps you can get, this one is all you need. Got it set for airplane mode while I am asleep, and wifi off while I am at work, but not at the weekends. Love it !!

Great Love this app! Is there any way that we can get a method to back up our settings though? I'd like to be able to just export to XML or something and save to my SD card so they can be imported back in if i do a factory reset.

Would like 4g and gps Its great wifi can be turned on and off, but if im driving or walking/running somewhere everyday, theres no setting to turn 4g and/or gps on or off. This would be a wonderful addition to an already amazing app

Google Nexus 7 I tried this on my Google Nexus 7 rooted, and it broke the audio. No audio would occur, even after I uninstalled this program. I had to re-flash my whole ROM.

Fixed it! The experimental fix works GREAT! Kudos for getting that working. No more getting woke up by modifications.

Brilliant app I used to spent so much time turning on and off my wifi and cell services and ringer volumes at night and when I was at work to save battery and stop the phone ringing annoying people. I looked at many apps including locale before settling on this one.It now does it all for me! I now get 2 days of use before I have to charge my phone with moderate use. I also monitored the app to see if it drained the battery itself but it's awesome at that as well. Next to no battery drain. I would pay for this app.

Great App, but... I'd like to see it turn off GPS and account sync though. Also, it needs a way to back up profiles. I reset my phone and have to do it all again.

An essential app I love this app: simple but oh so effective. This should come built in to android. Indespensible.
Sansaarchand, Aug 24, 2012
Please, Make it even better perfect... Missing the 3g and gps on/off swigches..

Moving On Decent app, but it didn't work well for me. I liked being able to adjust my sound settings on a schedule, but Timeriffic gives you no easy option for deviating from that schedule (ie - moving to a different sound profile earlier than you normally would). Also, personally, it is easier for me to conceptualize my sound profiles as having a range (ie "night" is from 11pm-7am) than just a start time (ie "night" starts at 11pm and never ends, but "day" overrides it at 7am). I just made the switch to AudioGuru and am already liking it a lot better. It doesn't allow me to change settings like bluetooth and WiFi, but I honestly never used those features in Timeriffic anyway.

Great for battery life This app is great for putting your phone to sleep when you should be sleeping also. I also use it to change to vibrate while at work to avoid embarrassing rings. Would like to see additional controls like control of sync for low power modes.

Amazing This App is amazing, work perfectly, great idea.

Was a great app... Been using for 2 yrs. ICS no longer has separate ringer/notification volume. App is supposed to be able to separate them to allow ringer only at night with no notifications, but it won't do it since ICS. Dev very willing to help troubleshoot, but nothing worked. Thanks for the assistance dev, but I have to move on. EVO 3d.
