Summary

For a long time, my favorite program for Android was Locale. This app made it possible for me to set up profiles linked to the time of day and my location. So when I drove to work in the morning, my phone’s sound settings were normal, and Bluetooth and WLAN were switched off. Locale then switched my profile, so that once I was at the office the settings turned silent, and Bluetooth and WLAN were switched on. The app costs $9,99 nowadays, and because that’s a bit too pricey for me I started looking into possible alternatives, which is how I came across Timeriffic. What does Timeriffic have to offer and can it replace Locale?

Today’s test review was written by Kevin Taron.

Features & Use

Section rating:

At first glance, Timeriffic comes across as somewhat confusing. Once you’ve spent a bit of time trying to get the hang of it, you figure out which functions Timeriffic has to offer, though.

This is the best way to use Timeriffic:

• • First off, you set up a profile (e.g. work)
• • You can set up different actions, edit, or delete them within this profile
• • Once you’ve set up an action, you can decide when it should be executed (e.g. Monday-Friday 7am)
• • You can set up the action in detail (you can also choose not to change any of the options)
o o Ringer on/off
o o Vibration on/off/Vibration for messaging only/Vibration for calls only
o o Volume in %
o o Message notification in %
o o WIFI on/off
o o Screen brightness in %
o o Flight mode on/off
o o Bluetooth (not yet supported)
o o If APNdroid is available you can choose if Dataroaming should be on/off
• • You can then set up more actions (e.g. Monday-Friday 5pm), and then change your settings accordingly

So, for instance, you could set up a profile that switches your phone to silent, switches WLAN off, etc. every morning before work, and as soon as you finish work everything is switched back on.

Once you’ve chosen which other profiles you need (flight mode on at night and off when you wake up in the morning, and so on), you can set them up according to your preferences so that you won’t have to do anything manually any longer. No more embarrassing interruptions by callers during meeting, just because you forgot to change your profile.

There are still a few options missing from the profile configuration details: there’s no display timeout, lock screen, or Bluetooth (mentioned above).
Also, it isn’t possible to select profiles manually, so that you can use the set up whenever you like, and not just at the designated time. And there’s no Widget, either.

Bottom line:

Timeriffic is alright, and to a certain extent it does live up what it’s meant to be able to provide. And although it works fine, I’m still missing a few things. I can’t help but compare it to Locale, and unfortunately Timeriffic just can’t compete with it. Too bad!

Screen & Controls

Section rating:

The entire app is a bit too busy with graphics and colorful text blurbs. I had to get used to the app’s design, but once I did I found that it pretty much does what it’s meant to.

You’ll find a display in the upper margin that lets you know when the last changes were made, as well as when the next action will be taken (the details of the action are also shown).
Profiles and action set-ups are next. There you’ll find an overview of different profiles and the action details. It isn’t possible to shift around action details amongst the different profiles, unfortunately.

Controls are relatively simple. To change an action all you need to do is click on it; to delete it you have to press on it for a longer time. You can rename or delete profiles by clicking on them for a long time.

Speed & Stability

Section rating:

Timeriffic didn’t crash during the testing phase. No problems to report—all the actions were carried out at the correct times.

Price/Performance Ratio

Section rating:

Timeriffic can be downloaded for free from the Android Market.

the screen is way too crowded and disorienting...

Overall a pretty good app.. I use it to auto sleep ring and auto dim my Eris at night then return to normal in the morning.. also I have a weekly meeting I attend for a hour.. and its set to vibrate only for that hour. I don't care how it looks... once setup.. you never really need to look at it any way.

Awesome. Thanks a lot, I literally cannot function without this app on my phone now. :) Wish I could give it SIX stars.

brilliant. should be on every handset. Bombroof. Uses next to no resources, never goes wrong. Best of type. One of the finest apps on the market.

Essential

Excellent! Highly recommended! Prolongs my battery life. I use this to switch off wireless while I'm at work, and turn my phone to silent while I'm at work and overnight. I can't believe phones don't come with this kind of this automatically installed!

Please Fix - Zero volume on Samsung Galaxy Nexus isn't zero, it's just really quiet.

just what I needed

Love the idea, but unreliable. I love not having to remember to turn my notifications off before bed! I can't override the app though. I needed to for severe weather warnings, and despite changing the volume in my phone's settings AND unchecking the box next to the profile ... Timerrific cancelled the noise anyway.

Almost perfect Outstanding app, but could you please sort the actions by time? Excellent otherwise!

Never let me down. Takes some time to set up but does exactly what it says on the tin. My phone goes silent at night and quiet during the working day and does it all automatically.

Please work on settings backup Had to factory reset my GNex and when it reinstalled Timeriffic, I had to manually redo all my settings. They were not brought back from the backupProvider. Other than that, awesome work guys.

Great in theory I used it a lot until my phone keep slowing down. Whenever I would hit the home button, it would take 3 to 5 seconds for the icons to display. Since removing the app, it has been acting b etter

Excellent app, should be by default in android Excellent application for scheduling the silence, vibration, brightness, plane mode, and more thing, according to you habbits. You can put plane mode while sleeping and start vibration mode when going to work, and noisy mode when you go out, every day at the same time (activation week days can also be configured, if different time is needed depending on the date). You must take care on holydays, because the default schedule will be used for that week day.

Works great on Google TV too! Have Timeriffic on my phones and tablet and it works well on Google TV too. Love the interface and the easy control. 6 atars.

Galaxy Nexus issues I've been using this app forever. It's one of the first things installed. The ICS issues people are having are NOT the app's fault. Notice in settings that you can no longer separate ringer and notification volume. Neither can the app. A problem for me because I want ring at night, no notifications. Installing a ROM that has fixed this ICS flaw, also fixes my problem.

Great Awesome app. Developers are great and helped me with an issue quickly. Galaxy Nexus
Guido, Mar 16, 2012
Good But Buggy I have a simple need: M-F, silent at 10pm, everything on again at 6am. On Sa-Su I want silent at 11pm and on again at 7:30 am. Seems simple enough. But I often notice about 8am on a weekday that it's still in nighttime mode, all silent, and it's tough to convince it to go to the right settings. And seems to disable WiFi every so often even though that's not in any of my profiles. Droid3.
