The official Dropbox app has been released. I find that the app has less to offer – in certain areas – than other Dropbox apps such as Droidbox—and so I’m actually a little disappointed in the official app. So imagine my surprise when I came across today’s app, which is similar to Dropbox, but which provides a much better user interface. Read on to find out more.
Like SugarSync and Dropbox, ZumoDrive is an online hard drive which you can access via computer as well as via your phone (providing you’ve installed the corresponding app), and which allows you to synchronize files between different computers. After setting up an account you will receive 1 GB of free storage space. You can get an extra GB by doing the online tutorial. I found this to be a bit annoying, but I suffered in silence in order to get my extra GB. If you’re happy with ZumoDrive, you can then "rent" more online storage space.
ZumoDrive’s big advantage is the app’s clarity: there’s nothing confusing about it. Your online files are divided into “Files”, “Music”, and “Photos”, and it’s possible to look at pictures or listen to music without having to download the corresponding files. Dropbox and SugarSweet allow you to stream MP3s as well (though if you want to look at photos these have to be downloaded), but on top of that ZumoDrive provides you with a very good player which files your selection under Artist, Album, or Song. That way you don’t have to navigate through files to find your music. And, as I said, you can look at pictures online, without having to download them first.
Ultimately SugarSync, Dropbox, and ZumoDrive offer the same functions, but I prefer ZumoDrive’s user interface. I also like that ZumoDrive is displayed as a hard drive and not as a file on the computer, even though this has nothing to do with the Android app itself.
After you’ve started the app and entered your access data (it’s possible to set up your account from your phone as well), your files will be displayed via three tabs in the upper half of the screen. You can then access your “Files”, “Music”, and “Photos”.
The menu button gives you the following options:
Home
Refresh
Upload
Change User
Exit
ZumoDrive doesn’t have an options menu, but this didn’t bother me.
Most options are self explanatory. Via “Upload”, you choose exactly what it is you want to upload:
New Photo
New Video
From Photo Gallery
From Video Gallery
From Device/SDcard
Everything works very smoothly, except that in order to use the “From Device/SDcard” option, you need the file manager “AndExplorer”, which you then have to install if you don’t already have it on your phone. To the app’s credit, is has to be said that it does notify you that you’ll need this file manager, whereas you have to figure that out by yourself when using the official Dropbox app. If you want to upload files to specific folders, you have to open the folder in question first, and then upload the file.
Aside from being able access the “Files” tab, you can also access all of ZumoDrive, as well as navigate folder, Explorer-style. By pressing on a file for a long time you’ll be given the following options:
Open File
Share File
Save to SD card
“Music” allows you to access all your online MP3s via a very smartly designed player. You can choose between Artists", "Albums", "Songs", and "Playlists“; this allows you to find songs easily, which can then be played (streamed). By pressing on a track for a long time, you can “Save to SD card” and then download to your phone.
Accessing photos via the “Photos” tab is just as easy. All files that contain pictures are displayed. “Photo Library” also displays all your photos, which are displayed as thumbnails. When you click on a thumbnail, the photo is displayed. By swiping your finger across the screen you can then view other photos or the whole folder. The only thing that’s missing is a zoom function.
Bottom line:
I like ZumoDrive as a whole (the interface, controls, and using it on the computer), and the same is true for the Android app. It’s very user friendly and I was able to work with it straight away. I like the music player and photo display functions a lot—they’re better than what’s provided by the other apps mentioned, which I’ve also been using for quite some time.
No problems to report: the app ran smoothly throughout the testing phase.
You can download ZumoDrive for free from the Android Market.

I could mot find the official dropbox app on market (htc legend here) and discovered zumodrive. I am very satisfied with zumodrive service and app usability.
