Why are aliens always portrayed as being inherently evil? Maybe it’s because without them we wouldn’t be able to enjoy games like Slugs. I had a ton of fun with these evil aliens while playing Slugs. If you’re planning on saving our beloved planet from extraterrestrial monsters, make sure to read today’s test report.
The game’s plot is simple: aliens are attacking your planet and it’s your responsibility to fend off the attacks. Slugs has two different game modes: Challenges with 40 levels and Survive, where you have to fight off the onslaught of aliens for as long as you can. The extraterrestrial threat comes from outer space with dozens of different types of aliens falling down on you from the sky.
Depending on the level, you are allocated a certain number of stones that can be shot at incoming alien creatures. You can also collect used stones and reuse them as ammunition. Once an enemy has landed on the surface of your planet, it starts jumping around in the air. This gives you the chance to shoot an alien down even if he has already hit the ground.
An eye is all that is left of an obliterated alien. Collect these eyes to receive extra points. Different colored eyeballs can also give you power ups. Red eyes, for example, make you invincible for a limited amount of time. During this power-up you can destroy aliens simply by touching them. Yellow eyes allow you to detonate a deadly explosion with a tap of the screen or a click of the trackball. Watch out for green eyes that switch the direction of your controls, which can be really irritating! It’s more of an anti power-up to be quite honest. You can review the meaning of all the different colors by clicking on Help via the menu button. You should be able to figure out the rules of the game on your own pretty quickly. There are also different types of aliens. Green aliens can be destroyed with just one shot, whereas all other colored aliens split into multiple creatures once they are hit.
After playing the game for about half-an-hour, I initially felt like giving this game a 3 star rating. But after playing a little bit longer, I found the game to be a whole lot of fun, even if it’s not anything new as far the game concept is concerned.
On the main menu of Slugs you can choose between two different game modes: Challenges or Survive. There are also the following additional options available via the menu-button:
If you’ve selected to play a game in Challenges mode, you can choose which level you’d like to play. This only works if you’ve already unlocked a couple of levels. During game play, the following information is displayed on your screen:
At the bottom of your screen, you can see which level you are currently playing. You can always pause the game by pressing a button at the bottom right of your screen.
You control your alien-fighting character by using the phone’s tilt sensors. Shooting is done by either pressing the trackball or tapping the screen. The controls are really well-done.
Bottom Line:
I had fun with every aspect of this wonderful game. Slugs may not be a game for the long-term, but it sure does keep entertained for a couple of days.
Slugs runs smoothly and without any problems.
Slugs can be downloaded for free from the Android Market.
