Are you interested in taking screenshots of your Android phone without using SDK?
Read on in order to find out how this – and more – is possible with PicMe.
Today’s test review was written by Jan B-Punkt.
If you have root access to your phone you’ll find that when you download this app you’re rewarded with 2 tools.
Firstly, PicMe makes it possible to take screenshots using the browser, and secondly you can also control your phone via the browser.
After the device has integrated itself with the WLAN that’s provided, you start up the app and accept the EULA. You will then be given an address (http://IP_Adresse:8082), with which you can access the browser.
Unfortunately, I can’t say whether or not it will work with 3G. The IP address is communicated, but it isn’t possible to access the browser. However, this may be contingent on the provider.
A static view of the phone will then load in the browser, and the device will emit a sound typically associated with cameras.
It’s then possible to save the screenshot via right click, or else pull the image into a file from the browser. This way you don’t have to deal with copying the screenshots onto your computer.
If you want to take a new screenshot all you have to do is refresh the browser contents or switch to live-mode.
If you click on Live (standalone) in the browser it’s even possible to control your phone per browser. Theoretically, what this means is that by connecting with desktop recording software (Cam-Studio and the like), it should be possible to make videos, too.
In order to exit the application, just click on the app symbol and select Quit.
Bottom line:
Even though this software is designed for root devices only, it does provide everything you need in order to record things graphically. The added features of controlling the app via browser and being able to make videos are an extra bonus. However, we’re awarding this app 4/5 (which ain’t bad at all), because in order to use it you may need further software as well as root access in order to fully take advantage of it.
The controls are kept nice and simple. Start the program, accept the EULA, open the browser, save the screenshot, end program: easy!
I’ve been using this program on my HTC Magic for a while now, and have never experienced any grave problems. Sometimes it gets a bit jolty, though.
The app can be downloaded free of charge and free of advertisements from the Market.
