As the application’s name indicates, Meteor Brick Breaker is a Block Breaker/Breakout clone. There are a few games of the same kind out there, and the question is whether or not Meteor Brick Breaker has anything new to offer. Read on and you’ll find out.
Meteor Brick Breaker provides 90 different levels that look like Space Invaders. Rather than using a paddle to keep balls within the playing field in order to use them to destroy blocks, in this game you are navigating a spaceship with a protective shield around the upper half.
There are plenty of different types of blocks which you’ll have to destroy, and you also have to wipe out and/or evade other enemies.
There are different types of power-ups (more details under Screen & Controls).
Sounds and Graphics are pretty cool and compliment each other well. The design of the different levels is nicely diversified. All in all, Meteor Brick Breakout has quite a lot to offer.
You’ll find the following options in Meteor Brick Breaker’s main menu:
• New Game
• Resume
• Options
• Help
• Records
You can only set the volume for Sound under Options, and you’ll find brief explanations regarding controls and power-ups under Help.
Every time you start a new game you can determine the degree of difficulty (Easy, Normal, and Hard), and select a level via nine screenshots.
The spaceship is in the lower half of the screen. Beneath it you’ll find the controls bar with which you can navigate the spaceship horizontally using your finger. In order to fire a round you have to press on the display above the controls bar.
In case there’s someone out there who isn’t yet familiar with Breakout’s gameplay: the point is to keep the ball in the playing field using your paddle (or, in this case your spaceship), as well as use it to destroy blocks. As mentioned, there are several types of blocks in Meteor Brick Breaker. Some of them have to be hit several times before they’re destroyed, some explode and wipe out other blocks when doing so, and others have to be switched on (you can tell these ones apart by the little lamp) in order for you to successfully finish a level. Some blocks contain bonuses which you receive after you’ve destroyed them. The bonuses include stronger balls with more wipe-out potential, as well as weapons which enable you to shoot at things with your spaceship. In order to use them you have to tap on the spaceship or any space above the controls bar. This is just a brief selection of the types of blocks you will encounter—there are many other kinds, you’ll have to find out for yourself. You’ll discover what the properties of the different blocks are – as well as what you have to do in order to destroy them – as you play.
Similarly, there are lots of different types of power-ups: more lives, more balls, faster balls, slower balls, etc. You will also come across enemy spacecrafts which have to be destroyed as well. The spacecrafts will open fire at you so you have to evade them. You generally have to hit them several times in order to destroy them; a small red bar lets you know the progress of their undoing. The bar keeps getting smaller, until the enemy is destroyed.
The 90 levels are super diversified and visually well made. The soundtrack compliments the Space Invaders thematic nicely, too.
In order to pause the game, click on the pause button in the upper left corner. I have to say that this button is badly located as it’s difficult to reach when you’re in the middle of a game. You should also use the back button, but the options Continue and Quit appear only briefly before the game ends. This leads me to conclude that the app has some kind of bug.
Bottom line:
Meteor Brick Breaker is the best Block Breaker game for Android out there. It offers lots of levels , power-ups, and a great variety of blocks, so there’s no way you’ll get bored too easily of this game.
As is the case with several games that come with sophisticated graphics, Meteor Brick Breaker doesn’t always run smoothly and sometimes even lags a bit. However, if you make sure that there aren’t any other applications running in the background this shouldn’t be too much of an issue. I found the app’s speed and performance in general to be satisfying despite occasional bumps along the road.
You can download Meteor Brick Breaker for UK£2.50 from the Android Market.
