Even if you don’t usually share your smartphone with others, it’s probably a good idea to keep certain programs away from prying eyes. It’s also important to make sure that no one can access your personal information if you happen to lose your phone. App Lock is meant to lend you a hand in keeping you phone safe and protected. Find out if the app is as bullet-proof as it sounds in today’s test.
App Lock may be useful for anyone looking to protect certain apps with a password. While partying hard at a club, it doesn’t take much to lose track of your phone on the dance floor or at the bar. Activating App Lock keeps sensitive personal data locked if a stranger finds your phone. With App Lock you can stop worrying about your friends or family playing around with your device when you’re not looking. Just add the most important information like contacts, text messages, emails etc. to the App Lock’s special protection list. Apps in this list can now only be accessed by entering in a four-digit code.
Unfortunately, App Lock has a really serious problem which defeats the purpose of the entire app. Surprisingly, App Lock doesn’t automatically start-up when your turn on your phone. This means that turning the phone off and back on again is all that it takes for a stranger to bypass App Lock. Epic fail!
Bottom Line:
If it wasn’t for the app’s fatal flaw, I would’ve given this app at least 3 stars because the app works well when it’s turned on. In the end, however, it is simply unacceptable for a privacy app to have such a huge security gap.
At start-up three apps are in your App Lock Protection List by default:
SMS/MMS
Settings
Google Mail
These are displayed as icons on App Lock’s main screen. An additional four buttons are located at the bottom:
Settings
Protection List
FAQs
Unlock (Get the full-version with Pro Key)
In order to access Settings and the Protection List, you have to enter the default password (8888). You’ll find the following options in settings:
Enable App Lock
Lock Delay (Set a time limit for how quickly the password needs to be entered)
Exclude locations (Determine places where App Lock is inactive (works only with Pro Key))
Show hint
4 digits passcode
Password hint
Challenge question
Inside the Protection List simply place a checkmark next to any apps that you would like to have password-protected with AppLock. Pressing the menu button gives you the option to Clear All or Filter (All, Running and 3rd Party).
Once you’ve secured an app with the passcode, a password window pops up every time you click on the app. If you select Show Hint and Password Hint in the settings, these appear as a message at the top of the screen.
Pressing “Help” gives you the following options:
Home Screen (Go back to the main screen)
Password Hint
Password recovery question
Contact developer
Bottom Line:
There isn’t much to complain about as far as layout and controls are concerned. Securing individual apps with a password is easy and quick to do.
AppLock ran smoothly and without any problems during our test.
AppLock can be downloaded for free from the Android Market. Almost all of the features are available in the free version. In order to use the Exclude locations options, you need to purchase an AppLock Pro Key for $1.99.
