Summary
With their large screens and high-speed internet connection smartphones aren’t just great for emails, but can also be useful in keeping track with what’s going on around the world. For those of you interested in having access to normal news websites all in one place, World Newspapers may just be the right solution for you.
Features & Use
World Newspapers is an umbrella app for a huge variety of newspapers and magazines. This application is more or less a browser that adjusts newspaper websites for your mobile screen. American media is definitely overrepresented with its own individual section, but international newspapers are also present. Here’s a short overview of the menu:
- Favs: Add any newspaper or magazine to your favorites with long-tap.
- USA: American newspapers
- By Country: Lists countries and categories.
- RSS: RSS Feed Reader
The first newspapers listed are always the sponsored ones that are then followed by the all the rest in alphabetical order. Besides browsing through the 33 countries available, you can also search for news by category. In Magazines you’ll find such interesting sites as National Geographic, Newsweek, Consumer Reports, FHM and even Esquire. In the Fun/Social/Populaer category you can check out Collegehumour, BrainyQuote and Slashdot among other things. Finally, there’s a Diverse and Android category to peak your interest.
Once you’ve opened the homepage of one of the newspapers, three symbols are displayed in the browser: a home button (returns to main menu), an option button (Home, Refresh, Share) and a separate share button. The latter let’s you share your current screen via Gmail or Bluetooth. Very practical, indeed!
Unfortunately, multi-touch is not supported, so you have to use the + and – signs to zoom in and out of an article.
I have to admit that the app’s selection is very impressive. The app is best for people that are always on top of the latest news from all over the world. The great thing about World Newspapers is that you can create a customized list of your favorite newspapers, which saves you a lot of time. Another advantage of this app is that the articles are condensed into an easy-to-read mobile format.
The RSS Fedd Reader is also useful. You can add and search for feeds manually or just let everything run through Google News. Pressing your phone’s menu button in the main menu let’s you open the help page as well as search or suggest newspapers.
All in all the app is really useful despite the fact that it lacks multi-touch support and is not as multi-lingual as one would expect.
Screen & Controls
The app may not be flashy or eye-catching, but the navigation and controls are a piece of cake.
Speed & Stability
The app starts up in an instant, runs smoothly and quickly and didn’t have a single problem during the entire test!
Price/Performance Ratio
World Newspapers is available for free with ad banners from Android Market.
