Summary

A quick chat with your girlfriend, the obligatory weekly conversation with your mother who’s worried sick about you and all those text messages inviting you to parties on the weekend…

It’s hard to keep track or even estimate how many minutes and text messages you use monthly. Have you gone over your plan’s limit? Have you sent one too many texts? It’s always a gamble when you open last month’s phone bill.

Stats is meant to add a bit more clarity and order to your cell phone use. Find out if you can finally stop worrying about your monthly bills in our test.

Features & Use

Section rating:

If you don’t want any sudden surprises to come up on next month’s cell phone bill, you’ve come to the right place. Stats keep track of the following data:

  • Incoming calls
  • Outgoing calls
  • Incoming text messages
  • Outgoing text messages
  • 2G/3G/4G Data Use
  • Wi-Fi Data Use

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. With a simple tap on one of these categories, you can access more detailed information and make the necessary adjustments. For every category you can set a limit, reset the counters or schedule an automatic reset. In addition to the number of minutes/text messages/data used, you can also view the total number of calls as well as receiving and sent data.

When you set-up a limit, you can see what percentage of your limit you’ve already used up. Press the menu button to access Preferences, where you have the following options:

  • Update Interval (1min, 5 min, 15 min, 30 min, …)
  • Medium Threshold (Set the threshold for medium usage notifications)
  • High Threshold (Set the threshold for high usage notifications)
  • Critical Threshold (Threshold for disabling 2G/3G/4G)
  • Rounding up incoming/outgoing calls (30/30, 60/1, 60/10, 60/30, 60/60, 240/240, 300/300)
  • Import/Export (Save all your limits and counters to the SD card in order to restore them if needed)

So far, so good, right? Well, before you get all excited there are a couple of important things you should know! According to the developer, don’t select a frequent Update Interval or you’ll drain your battery in the blink of an eye. Keep in mind that any text messages that are deleted between update intervals won’t be included in the statistic. Thankfully, the app automatically updates every time you start it up. Although setting a Critical Threshold disables your 2G/3G/4G networks, it doesn’t prevent you from receiving MMS. WARNING: Restarting your phone will erase any of these settings and turn mobile internet data back on.

Bottom Line:
The app is great for keeping track of your monthly cell phone statements. Some nice additions would be: a history of your previous monthly, the possibility of setting a price for every text message/minute and getting rid of the restart bug. Stats is still not entirely compatible with the latest devices like, for example, the HTC Wildfire. A list of supported devices can be seen on the last screenshot.

Screen & Controls

Section rating:

“Less is more” seems to have been the motto behind this app. The design is definitely not Oscar-worthy, but is simple and easy to navigate. All the functions are well explained and are easy to use.
A widget (like in DroidStats) would’ve added a nice touch to this functional app.

Speed & Stability

Section rating:

Stats ran just fine on my Desire with Android 2.2 (Froyo) without any crashes or lags.

Price/Performance Ratio

Section rating:

Stats can be downloaded for free and doesn’t include any ads.

I guess being open source would grant it an additional point, in my mind at least: it certainly improves availability.

"The app is free and doesn't include any ads" and yet you rate with 4* in section Price.
just wondering, what else you need to rate it with 5*... maybe the developer should pay you some money :-)

Great app I've used this app for two years, and it's always been exact. However, I just upgraded to a 4g LTE phone, and the data doesn't register, even though wifi does. Why is that?

Does what is promised... ...but could do with a few more functions. My suggestions: add an option to receive a monthly report on your usage for that month (for those of us who reset every month, but don't remember to check before the automatic reset) OR a usage history archive. The alerts are v. good for people who have difficulty keeping to your caps, but sadly not v. useful for my voice caps because it doesn't differentiate between calls within the network (which are free) and calls to other mobile networks, but that would be a bit difficult to develop. Therefore I only use it for texts and data. Mine reset on the wrong day this month, though. Don't know what happened...

An excellent application to keep costs in check
Will, Apr 19, 2012
Works great! Would be good to see previous months usage, and to the guy who thinks it mis-counts texts, you realise long texts count as two or three sometimes?
Peter, Apr 16, 2012
Not accurate Calls and texts are fine but the data is giving false readings, which is making me go over my plan.
