Feel like reading books from your Android? With all these tablets coming out lately, it's hard to find an app that works well on an Android phone. Maybe Moon+ Reader is right for you? Find out in today's test.
Moon+ Reader (let’s just call it Moony for short) sticks out in comparison to all the other reading apps just by the fact that its main menu doesn’t look like
a bookcase. The fresh-looking design is pleasing to the eye and the intuitive controls make it fun to use. Everything so clearly laid-out that you’ll never feel
lost.
First off, I really liked the integrated data browser: it’s really useful for finding and opening books from your SD card without having to go online. Of course, a net library is also included with a wide selection of different categories (check out the screenshots). Project Gutenberg – an online database of free books – is one of the best ones to look through with over 33 thousand publications! You can even download children stories with all of the original illustrations. Tap a catalog, tap a book, press the download button – and voilà! – the book is on your Android. If you prefer using different catalogs, you can add them by entering the name and
URL.
Reading itself is actual pleasant with moony because of its amazing screen layout. You start off with the book’s table of contents where you can skip the introduction to get straight to the action of the first chapter.
Moony supports all of the main ebook formats: epub, html, fb2, txt, umd and zip files. Unfortunately, PDF’s are not included, which may be a big turn off for some
of you. DRM-locked material was also left out. There are bookmarks in Moony, but you can take notes or highlight any passages. But seriously, are there actually any Android readers out there that can do that? The developers told me they are working on adding these features when I sent them an email about it. So they really care about their product and have good customer support.
Despite some small issues, Moony deserves all 4 stars for getting it right.
The controls for Moon+ Reader are really intuitive. I can’t think of a way how they could’ve done it any better. I also found the graphics to be very pleasant and well done. You adjust all of the controls to suit your tastes. See what happens when you swipe across the screen or shake your phone. When you complete one of these actions for the first time, the app asks you whether you would like to make any adjustments with a pop-up window. Although some of you may find this to be a bit annoying, I actually think that this feature is quite useful.
Need to adjust the brightness? No problem. Just swipe across the left side of your screen from the bottom-up (brighter) or from top to bottom (darker). Doing the same thing on the other side of the screen let's you scroll through the book. You can also flip through the pages by pressing the volume buttons on side of your phone. Double-tap the screen to view the menu (or press the menu button). Moony also marks the spot where you last left off when you shut off your phone.
You have a problem finding your way through the app's settings. The app also includes a couple of neat gimmicks. You can have the app tell you to let your eyes take a rest after an x number of minutes or it can notify when you stay up past your bedtime reading something. Now, isn't that just adorable?
All in all a great reading app. Deserves all 4 stars!
Moon+ Reader performed really well during out test. Crashes? Negative!
Moon+ Reader can be downloaded for free from the Android Market.
