Some things never get old. I enjoyed playing fighter plane games on my Nintendo 64 as a teenager and I still love these types of games with a passion today. There’s something inexplicably appealing about zipping through the air shooting down enemy airplanes and bombing military installations on the ground. Even with all the realistic action-packed war games out there, I miss the simplicity and fun of old-school fighter plane games that we used to play on our beloved consoles. Winds of Steel brings an old classic to your Android phone. Read on to find out how it fared in our test.
In Winds of Steel you are in the cockpit of a WWII bomber. Along your journey, you have to complete different missions by either bombing locations on the ground or destroying your enemies in the air. You have the following game modes to choose from:
CAMPAIGN
The campaign mode is made of different training missions that are meant to introduce you to the game. There are 12 campaigns all together. Step by step, as you become acquainted with your plane’s controls, your missions will gradually become more challenging. The targets on the ground are to be bombed and you should use your machine guns to combat enemies in the skies. All campaign targets can be played without having to go through checkpoints. Things get more difficult with each level. Before you start a level, you are briefly showed what targets have to be met to accomplish the level.
INSTANT ACTION
In instant action, you can choose between four different game scenarios. The levels are pretty hardcore in terms of difficulty. Personally, I couldn’t figure out if this game mode is infinite play or if the levels are just extremely hard to beat. In Instant Action campaigns, you get the feeling that there’s never a end of fighting in sight.
Bottom Line:
As much as I love playing WWII fighter plane games, I always keep in mind the horrific historical events upon which these games are based on. Given the tense situation between North and South Korea at the moment, it seems like the days of total war aren’t completely over just yet. Obviously, Winds of Steel is just a game and not an extremely realistic one at that, but I sincerely hope that the world won’t have to experience anymore bombings or air raids in the future.
Aside from that, the game is loads of fun! The levels are challenging and it’s no easy task to get through all the campaigns. Winds of Steel is really addicting and entertaining in an arcade hall kind of way.
Personally, I wouldn’t mind a bit more variety because only being able to use bombs or machine guns is a bit limiting. Some additions in weaponry would make the game even better.
The graphics of Wings of Steel are the best of virtually any Android game I’ve seen. You control the plane by tilting and moving the phone. The plane responds to your movements by moving either left or right. Directing the plane up and down can be done by tilting the phone forwards and backwards.
Use the touch screen to drop bombs, fire your machine guns and switch between your weapons. You’ll find a crosshair positioned in the middle of the screen representing your machine gun sight. Small red triangles represent enemy objects.
The game’s controls using the phone’s motion sensors are really intuitive and good. The same cannot be said for bombing bombs. You can’t really see where your bombs are landing, which makes it hard to destroy your targets. They should find a way for better bomb dropping precision.
Your phone vibrates when you’re hit, which is a nice little addition.
All in all Winds of Steel is top-notch. Due to the minor problems mentioned above, the game doesn’t have enough to earn it all five stars.
Winds of Steel runs superbly with awesome 3D graphics. No glitches or lags - it's amazing!
Winds of Steel costs $3.99. Worth every penny of it, in my opinion.
