The all encompassing synchronization with your own Google account is easy and convenient, but there are some risks to take into account: what’s going to happen to my data if I decide to delete my account? How does Google analyze information from my tasks lists, emails, contacts, and calendars? So far there haven’t been any cases of data abuse linked to Google, but better safe than sorry as 100% security isn’t guaranteed.
Android is an open system and doesn’t force you to make use of Google services. There are so many apps available in various markets making it possible to design your own system according to your preferences. My-Todolist - online helps you organize your tasks; you can also synchronize tasks with my-todolist.net’s webserver. Find out if this service can hold a flame to Google Tasks in today’s test.
Tested witht: HTC Desire
Version: Android 2.2
My-Todolist - online helps you organize your tasks. The app offers many options related to settings and administration.
A list fort he day lets you know what your tasks for the day are, sorted out according to priority (starting with the most important ones). This affords you with a good overview of what you have to take care of. You can sort each task and give it a title, category, priority end date, status, and a description if you are so inclined. Prioritizing ranges from “none” to “low”, “medium”, and “high priority”.
“All tasks” reveals everything you’ve entered so far, regardless of when the due date was. Here the tasks are sorted according to date, not priority; it would be really convenient to have the option of sorting according to priority for each day, but that isn’t possible at this point.
You can set the synchronization with the web-server to run automatically every hour, synchronize manually, or turn synchronization off completely. Synchronizing on the webserver requires an authentication key, which is somewhat mysterious seeing as there aren’t any real indications to be found on the website or in the app. I contacted the developer in regards to this issue and discovered that firstly you have to set up an account on my-todolist.net and then select Profile/Android connection. Synchronization can then begin! And the good news is that it works very well and is very reliable.
The app comes with a widget which displays your list of the day on your homescreen. It is also possible to import and export tasks as CSV files.
Advantages
• Doesn’t require a Google Account
• Organizing tasks online is also possible
• Widget affords a quick overview
Drawbacks
• Authentication key has to be requested manually
• Controls are somewhat cumbersome due to small icons
• Design is very basic
Bottom line:
The app could be but isn’t quite an alternative to GTasks or other organization-management apps. Though it is a functional app the controls aren’t 100% intuitive. The small icons will prove to be a hassle for users with large hand. Accessing the authentication key via the website is also a hassle and it didn’t occur to me straight away that that was the way to get the key. Another thing that’s missing is the possible to check tasks off the list as you take care of them.
My-Todolist - online doesn’t boast the most elaborate design, only basic Android elements. Controls aren’t as simple as you might expect, and the icons are much too small and thus not always easy to hit, though it’s not like you won’t be able to hit the side of the barn.
My-Todolist - online didn’t run very stabily and especially struggled when having to set up a new category. The app also crashed when I pressed on the back button.
My-Todolist - online can be downloaded for € 0,99 in the App Center or the Android Market.
