Find out more in today's review.
Features & Use
Tested using: HTC Desire
Version: Android 2.2
First things first: you'll need internet connection in order to send anything. Choose between W-Lan, Bluetooth, and USB. W-Lan only works if both devices ar linked to the same router.
Configurations can be seen to in the app: select a connection and ensure that the URL isn't accessed without authorization. You can set EasySMS to start up as soon as you turn on your Android, or else manually decide when the service should begin and when it should end.
If you've taught your router port restriction you can enter the port manually. There's an update intervall responsible for web-interface updates can also be adjusted. There's also an option that displays all your contacts, and special functions for HTC devices with HTC Sense can be activate via the check boxes combined with “Alt”. I recommend alternative sending for HTC devices with HTC Sense. You will also need your Android's IP address for W-Lan. EasySMS creates an icon for your status bar and displays the required IP which you should then insert into your broweser's address bar. Don't forget to enter the port which you just configured. What is then displayed in the address bar could look like this: “ http://192.168.178.33:2511”.
The options for establishing a connection via Bluetooth or USB are good alternatives for the intuitive W-Lan mode, but they're also still very much in the early stages. Configurations aren't exactly a walk in the park and there are lots of crashes. If you're eager to make use of them nonetheless click here for more information.
The browser displays functions which allow you to send and delete text messages, display contact pictures, and inform you if an SMS was sent successfully. A pop-up informs you whenever you receive new SMSs.
The donate version supports Chomp SMS codes, meaning you can send text messages for less money.
Advantages
- No further software required when using W-Lan connection
- Send SMS from web-interface
- Pop-up informs you when you receive new messages
Drawbacks
- Configurations for USB / Bluetooth connections iare complicated
- Instable connection via USB / Bluetooth
Bottom line:
I don't know that I fully agree that EasySMS - Desktop SMS Free is all that easy, seeing as configurations are complex if you decide not to go for a W-Lan connection. Once the connection is established, however, the app provides you with a few fun and useful gimmicks, such as the pop-up notification. Aside from configurations this is a pretty neat app that can definitely prove to be useful.
Screen & Controls
EasySMS - Desktop SMS Free may have “easy” integrated into its name, but controls aren't all that easy. It requires a lot of settings and the user is not provided with quick instructions. You have to wade through the FAQ in order to figure all the different configurations out. It will take you at least a half hour to get the app running.
The web-interface design is basic and while it serves its purpose it's nothing fancy.
Speed & Stability
EasySMS - Desktop SMS Free (or should I say Google Chrome) ran smoothly during the testing phase; stable, too. The Bluetooth connection wasn't that great, however.
Price/Performance Ratio
EasySMS - Desktop SMS Free can be downloaded free of charge in the Android Market. The donate version, which helps support the developer, can also be found in the Market.
