I’ve been using Astro as my file manager for ages and ages, but Dual File Manager caught my eye and I decided to take a close look. I honestly have to say that Astro will probably remain my go-to file manager, but Dual has a few very interesting and useful features, which is why the app is staying on my phone as my “number two go-to”. Find out more in today’s review.

Dual File Manager has a lot to offer: changing file names, deleting, moving, selecting, or copying several files at once, creating Zip, GZip, and Tar archives (level of compression can be set) open or unload an archive, add a password to Zip archives, turn a file into a bookmark (allows quick access to file), forward documents, show data information, and create new files. Phew!
And if that’s not enough, Dual File Manager also comes with overviews of lists and thumbnails for documents and folders, as well as a very good sorting option, a search function, and the option to drop files on to your desktop.
Okay, so after having told you about all these features let me get to the app’s main attraction: its duality. Basically, what this means is that two explorers are running and can be accessed via two tabs at the top of the display. Let me give you an example: you can have a file open in the first explorer and use the second explorer to select documents, copy or shift them around. The menu makes this nice and simple (see screen & controls for more details). Honk if you hate the procedure of selecting a document in a file and then navigating through all of your files until you find the one you’re looking for. Blech.
It doesn’t make sense to use Dual File Manager for every quick document action, but the double explorer function is great for sorting through photos and moving/copying them to different folders.
Bottom line:
Using file managers on a smartphone can be a bit of a pain in the neck. It can be so annoying that you prefer to take care of certain things on your computer via USB connection. Dual File Manager makes it possible to take care of a lot of things on your phone. Features such as the great search and sort options guarantee a well deserved five star rating.
If you’ve used file managers before Dual File Manger’s controls won’t come as a big surprise to you. You can navigate to “the next level” by clicking on folders, and return to the previous level by pressing on the back button. If you click on something for a long time the menu will pop up. Depending on whether you selected a document or file, you will see the following options:
Rename
Delete
Move
Copy
Move to #2 (move folders to the second tab)
Copy to #2 (copy folders to second tab)
Object information
New Zip
New GZip
New tar
Enable
Add bookmark
The explorers can be accessed via two tabs at the top of the display, where you’ll also find the Home and Bookmarks tabs. Bookmarks are shown in the form of a list from which you can select and open files.
The menu button provides you with the following options:
Select (Documents; All/None)
New... (create file or folder)
Display (mini view or list display as well as sorting option)
Find document
More
In order to select more than one document simple tick appropriate boxes on the right hand side of the screen. You can also use the “select all” option.
Go to More/Settings to find even more options:
Document system
Mini view motir
User interface
Select language
Bottom line:
You’ll find Dual File Manager’s controls to be a breeze even if you don’t have any experience with file managers. Controls are pretty much self-explanatory and work really well. I though about awarding the app five stars in this department as well, but there’s an ad banner at the bottom of the display which puts a tiny bit of a damper on the app’s optic quality.
Dual File Manager ran very smoothly; no problems whatsoever.
Dual File Manager can be downloaded free of charge in the App Center.
