Summary

Getting up early Monday morning to drag your feet to work can be one of the most unpleasant experiences of the week. Don’t you sometimes wish you could just stay in bed and skip out on another mundane day at the office? A brand-new app called Skiver generates the perfect medical excuses for missing a couple of days of work. Figure out new and fun ways to call in sick in our entertaining test report.

Features & Use

Section rating:

This app has an interesting back-story: Skiver is a Scottish slang term for an extremely lazy individual i.e. what Americans call a slacker.

The app is aimed at giving “skivers” a good reason or ‘skive’ to skip out on a boring day at the job.

Skiver let’s you create a profile of yourself that includes your name, sex and age. Using this information, the app randomly generates a sickness that you can use as an excuse for not showing up to work for a certain number of days. Whereas a migraine can be used to call in sick for a day, it’s better to go with something more serious like laryngitis if you are looking to take a long break from your workplace.

Here’s a small sample of some of the wonderful sicknesses to choose from:

Anxiety
Migraine
Arthritis
Gout
Yellow Fever (not very believable unless you live in the tropics)
Cowpox
And much more!

Once you’ve selected a medical excuse you can pull off, the app lets you: call your boss, email your work or add the sick day to your Google calendar.

Now it’s time to get out there and enjoy your stress-free sick day! Why don’t you treat yourself to something nice like a movie matinee or a relaxing time at a therapeutic spa? Skiver helps you find fun and relaxing things to do in your local area using Google Maps.

You can even join the global network of ‘skivers’ by entering in your location on the map. Fortunately, the app doesn’t reveal any personal information which means that your secret is safe from your boss.

Last but not least, you can share your sick day status on Twitter and Facebook, but be careful not to share this information with the wrong people (i.e. coworkers or your boss).

Summary

Skiver is a hilarious app based on an original and quirky concept. It’s a funny gimmick that’s been turned into a functioning app with a full set of features. Is this app really useful? I wouldn’t go that far, but it’s guaranteed to make you laugh.

Disclaimer: As the developers of the app warn you at start-up, this app should not be taken seriously and Skiver may not be held responsible for any work-related problems. Without going into the morality of the act of lying, it’s up to the individual to decide how they would like to use this app.

Screen & Controls

Section rating:

When you open Skiver for the first time, you have to accept the app’s terms and conditions that specify that the app is only for fun.

The main menu has the following options each with its own cute icon:

  • New Skive – create a new sick day
  • Browse All – look though all the medical conditions available
  • Find Cool Things – a list of fun and interesting things to do in your area by category
  • View Map – a map with all fellow ‘skivers’ in your area
  • My History – all your previous sick days
  • My Profile – name, sex and age

As far as graphics and layout are concerned, this app is absolutely top-notch! Beautiful icons, stylish design and simple layout – Skiver has all the necessary ingredients. Everything is easily accessible directly from the main screen. Integration with Google Directory and Google Maps is seamless and efficient.

Because the app is still fresh on the Market, I was only able to find two other ‘skivers’ in all of New York City.

Summary

This is an app with amazing intuitive controls and a pleasant look & feel. Good job!
