I’m sure there must be few (hobby) musicians out there who are familiar with the following scenario: you’re out and about when all of a sudden inspiration strikes and you can’t wait to start working on your next track. Problem is, you’re nowhere near your instrument and/or computer, and so recording the symphony you hear in your head proves to be difficult.
That’s where Android comes into play! SplashPlay may be just the thing you’re after.
Having SplashPlay on your Android device is virtually (in the true sense of the word) like always carrying your guitar around with you. This app let’s you try out and learn new songs, as well as upload tracks via a SplashPlay account. More details in today’s review.
SplashPlay is a sort of mobile guitar-lessons-machine.
Download songs from the SplashPlay website and upload them to your device. The app teaches you how to play guitar using light signals. However, so-called “hardware support – namely SplashPod and Lightpanel (for the guitar) – are required to load chords from your phone to the hardware.
That being said, even if you don’t want to invest in the hardware and don’t count on using SplashPlay as a learning tool, it’s still a good app to use for composing songs, be it on the go or when travelling by train or bus… whenever your creative muse pays you a visit, basically.
SplashPlay’s GUI design is very good—neat and tidy, just the way we like it! Thanks to a logical setup, it’s easy getting the hang of this app. Controls are equally intuitive and easy to use. To top it all off, there’s a thorough help menu which assists users when it comes to controls, etc.
SplashPlay's performance is very good: smooth, fast, and even when you’ve been using the app for a while it keeps going strong, without any glitches in efficiency or stability. There were no crashes and no lagging throughout the testing phase.
The same thing goes for the interaction between app and website: up/downloading songs via the account takes but an instance.
The sound quality is clear and the animations didn’t flicker or lag when a track was being played.
SplashPlay can be downloaded for free from the Android Market. However, you will have to pay for an extra hardware in order to make use of all of the app’s functions.
