I often find myself browsing the Market for a straight-forward, well-thought-out calendar that doesn’t come with too many fancy functions and features, and let me tell you that they aren’t easy to come by. I look for a calendar that will provide me with the essentials, i.e. a precise, quick overview of my appointments, rather than distract me with anything else. Simple and easy controls are also important. CalenGoo seems to tick both those boxes—find out more in today’s review.
“Appointments, dates, deadlines, and, oh, three of my friends have birthdays coming up.”
Syncing with Google Calendar
CalenGoo syncs your appointments with your Google Calendar, which is especially useful if you plan on managing your calendar from your web interface. If you use labels to categorise your appointments they will be displayed accordingly. Seeing as the labels will organize your appointments according to colour, you will not only have a lovely looking calendar but will be able to suss out what you’ve got going on in the next few days very quickly.
The app can be used even if you decide not to sync; syncing is not absolutely necessary.
Get an overview of your day, week or month
CalenGoo can display up to four different calendar views. Choose between a detailed view of your day, week or month, or else a list of all your upcoming events. The landscape view affords you a very good overview of your appointments.
Display Google Tasks
You will appreciate this function if you also use Google to organize your tasks. CalenGoo will display all of your tasks in the calendar. Now, you might be thinking that the security issue is set on the back burner at this point, as the app needs your Google login data to perform this function. One would think that in the era of OAuth and AuthSub this type of thing could and should be circumvented, and cautious users may be seeing a red flag at this point. Never fear, I’ve done a bit of research so as to soothe your minds, my faithful readers! Syncing tasks with CalenGoo can also be done using the safe AuthSub process. In order for this to work you first have to activate synchronization within your Google Calendar account. This authorization is then automatically transferred.
There were issues with syncing during the testing phase: it kept crashing with an error report. We contacted the developer regarding this issue, but he didn’t get back to us in time for our copy deadline.
Developers' Response Regarding Task Synching With AuthSub [UPDATE!]
"Google Tasks synchronization does not yet support AuthSub Login, it only works with the correct password. If you feel uncomfortable entering your password in CalenGoo, you can turn on Google's new 2-step verification and generate an 'application specfic password' for CalenGoo (only applicable to those with normal Google accounts, not Google Apps Accounts)."
This email from the developers confirms that it is perfectly safe to use CalenGoo's task synchronization. Well done on the part of the developer's support team!
Settings—let’s get personalized!
CalenGoo’s design is simple but good (more details in Screen & Controls). Users are pretty much given carte blanche at styling the display according to their preferences. Changing the colours and display mode for widgets, or setting time zones—everything is possible.
Widgets all around the world
Android is capable of quite a lot more than the iPhone. Widget—the word sends most Android lovers little hearts aflutter. CalenGoo makes the most out of widget. Select a widget for lists, months, weeks and days and set which size the widget should have. Sizes ranges from 2x2 to full screen. You can also choose what colour and transparency your widget should have.
Bottom line + “what can other calendar apps do?”
Jorte is a calendar classic; it has an upper hand on CalenGoo in the sense that it’s free. Jorte can be synced with the Google Calendar, too, and it too comes with lots of settings options. Business Calendar Free and Calendar Pad are also very good. Pocket Informant-Events, Tasks is also available from the Market, but it costs EUR 4,50 and it can’t do everything that CalenGoo can do.
As you can see, there’s lots of competition… but CalenGoo is simple and functional, plus controls are easy. It’s an app that will bring more structure into your calendar. The widgets help you keep on top of what’s most important, and the settings options are generous. The app’s design is rather simplistic when it comes to colour, but you can remedy that and make changes according to your own preferences. The option to Dran’n’ Drop events is a big highlight. What matters in the end is really what you like—but we highly recommend CalenGoo nonetheless!
Advantages
• Easy controls
• Good support
• Great options of personalizing
• Great landscape view
• Lots of widgets to choose from
• Shifting events around is a breeze thanks to Drag’n’Drop
• Google sync
Drawbacks
• AuthSub does not work with task sync with Google
• Back-Hard-Key doesn’t always work
• No Apps2SD
Adjustable design
As mentioned, the colouring is quite basic and discreet. However, if you like you can make adjustments within the settings. The same goes for widgets.
Controls—easy, peasy, lemon squeezy!
Ah, Drag’n’Drop, we love you! Shifting events around isn’t always hassle free when using other apps… but it is when using CalenGoo! CalenGoo is a real timer-saver: use Drag’n’Drop to move events around without much ado. Syncing with the Google Calendar occurs automatically, meaning that you will see changes you’ve made online after only a few seconds.
Swiping also works a charm, making it fun to use a calendar—who would’ve thought?
Counterintuitive controls?
A double tap is needed to activate every function or view every appointment—something most of us aren’t used to. This came across as somewhat counterintuitive to me. The Hard-Key-Back button doesn’t always work in the detail view of an event, meaning you can’t bypass the Save or Cancel functions. The little check boxes have to be hit quite precisely whenever you want to activate or deactivate something in the settings—weird.
CalenGoo performed really well throughout the testing phase. Syncing with Google Calendar was really fast and easy, just the way we like it!
CalenGoo can be dowloaded for € 5,39 from the App Center.
