Summary

The official Google calendar app is not doing a bad job under Android 4.0. Still, users who are looking to add a lot of details to their diaries may find the stock Google calendar app to be somewhat limiting, seeing as it doesn't come with many settings options. This is where 3rd party apps come into the picture, and today I decided to revisit an old favourite: CalenGoo. More details after the jump.

Features & Use

Section rating:

Test device:
Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Stock Android 4.0)
Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 (Custom-Rom Android 4.0)

Let me start by saying that CalenGoo offers a tremendous amount of features and options, including:

  • Syncing with the stock phone calendar, Google calendar and Google Tasks
  • Daily, monthly, weekly and lsit views, plus two landscape format daily views
  • Search function
  • Appointment reminder via SMS, email and pop up notification
  • Settings galore
  • Lots of widgets

Check out the developers' page for more in-depth information.

Syncing with Google Calendar

Many of you will be looking to sync with the Google Calendar and/or Google Tasks. Calendars that are connected with the account on your smartphone or tablet will be linked up automatically and appear in CalenGoo without you having to do anything. In order to sync Google Tasks you will have to eneter your account details in the settings. Once this is done, syncing works like a charm; same goes for syncing with the calendar.

The app can be used even if you decide not to sync; syncing is not absolutely necessary.

Get an overview of your day, week or month

CalenGoo can display up to four different calendar views. Choose between a detailed view of your day, week or month, or else a list of all your upcoming events. The landscape view affords you a very good overview of your appointments.

Display Google Tasks
You will appreciate this function if you also use Google to organize your tasks. CalenGoo will display all of your tasks in the calendar. Now, you might be thinking that the security issue is set on the back burner at this point, as the app needs your Google login data to perform this function. One would think that in the era of OAuth and AuthSub this type of thing could and should be circumvented, and cautious users may be seeing a red flag at this point. Never fear, I’ve done a bit of research so as to soothe your minds, my faithful readers! Syncing tasks with CalenGoo can also be done using the safe AuthSub process. In order for this to work you first have to activate synchronization within your Google Calendar account. This authorization is then automatically transferred.

Settings—let’s get personalized!
CalenGoo’s design is simple but good. Users are pretty much given carte blanche at styling the display according to their preferences. Changing the colours and display mode for widgets, or setting time zones—everything is possible. The different categories of settings help you create a very personalised overview of days and weeks to come. Here are some of the categories:

  • General
  • Birthdays from the address book
  • Display calendar views
  • Detailed view
  • Display numbers and SMS links
  • Add description when sending SMS
  • Search
  • Do not show past appointments
  • Display search option
  • Save search keys
  • Font and font size
  • ...

Widgets all around the world
Widget—the word sends most Android lovers little hearts aflutter. CalenGoo makes the most out of the widget feature. There are 27 (!) to choose from. Widgets can be personalised and accessorised to your heart's content, suing everything ranging from style, colour, transparency, font and more.

CalenGoo is simple and functional, plus controls are easy. It’s an app that will bring more structure into your planning. On the whole, it's pretty impressive to see all of the useful features and settings options the devs have managed to pack into this calendar app.

Screen & Controls

Section rating:

Navigating CalenGoo feels very much like navigating the Google calendar app, i.e. you swipe through the various views.

For more options, click on the appointment you are looking to edit. Long press for moving an appointment.

Controls—easy, peasy, lemon squeezy!
Ah, Drag’n’Drop, we love you! Shifting events around isn’t always hassle free when using other apps… but it is when using CalenGoo! CalenGoo is a real timer-saver: use Drag’n’Drop to move events around without much ado. Syncing with the Google Calendar occurs automatically, meaning that you will see changes you’ve made online after only a few seconds.

Swiping also works a charm, making it fun to use a calendar—who would’ve thought?

Counterintuitive controls?
A double tap is needed to activate every function or view every appointment—something most of us aren’t used to. This came across as somewhat counterintuitive to me. However, once I got used to it I actually found it to be easier to use than what I had been conditioned to by using other calendar apps.

Bottom line:

CalenGoo is a great app for users who tend to work with their calendar app(s) on a regular basis. There are so many options and lots of widgets to help make your user experience completely tailored to your personal preferences. On the whole, I'm not surprised CalenGoo is achieving such unanimous praise in the Market.

Speed & Stability

Section rating:

CalenGoo performed really well throughout the testing phase. Syncing with Google Calendar was really fast and easy, just the way we like it!

Price/Performance Ratio

Section rating:

CalenGoo can be dowloaded for € 5,39 from the App Center. A fair price considering that the app is a regular little powerhouse.

Stop press: CalenGoo is our app of the week and is available for € 2,69 for a limited time only.

Best calendar app This app is so well developed. The programmer truly thought of everything imaginable. This is not only the best calendar app for Android devices, but also for iOS! I love how I can also see my calendar on my Apple iPad. On top of that almost everything can be customized. Also, it integrates lovely with my Google Calendar, especially if I use direct synchronization (so not via Android) and import other calendars to Calengoo (like the Facebook calendars and weather forecasts) via Google. This is the best money that I have spent on Google Play!

Thank God A cal that shows events from Google cal for more than s month or two. I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out how then this app to the rescue. Amazing customizations. Sync options are many. Works perfectly for Google cal. syncing. Wish it synced Facebook and had themes. Needs a touch of a facelift. I'd pay double! Great job.

Good features, highly customizable, friendly staff Main pluses for me: proper integration of tasks into the calendar view (e.g. past-due tasks can follow you day-to-day until done), no limit of 4 all-day events in day view, fully functional task editor (including reorder). Finally Google tasks is useful! Asked support a question and had a correct and friendly response within 10 mins. Great app, well worth the money.

Customizable Calengoo My wife and I have been using this app for a while now and love it for it's ease of use and the ability to make it do pretty much whatever you need it to do. The learning curve is a little steep because it can do so much. It will link contacts with events, and link that to Google maps, and much much more. I really like it's integration with Google calendar. It makes a mean cup of Joe...well, not really, but you get the picture.

Super The best that I've found. Love the syncing abilities and the choice of widgets. The only calender app for me.

slow - gums up the works slow- gums up the works... just took off another star and uninstalled. Phone is MUCH faster now. Samsung Captivate (AT&T)

Great Best calendar I've tried. Have used it for over 2 years. My only criticism is that the interface is a bit dated - it would be perfect in a holo theme!

Great! The UI needs an update...

WORST ON ANDROID HEAVEN ON MY IPOD TOUCH! HORRIBLE! I use Android as my phone and have a lot of premium apps on iOS. This app is worthless on android if you got used with it on iOS. IS IT THE SAME PROGRAMMER WHO BOTCHED THIS APP SO BAD?! At least put the option to import the settings from the iOS and I swear I'll never touch the configuration menu of this Pandora Box App!
A Google User, Apr 5, 2013
Love this app I've tried several apps, but this is a lot more customizable and user friendly. I can see all of my events from all of my calendars easily. I just discovered the widget that shows all of my events on my home screen, and I love it.

Excellent Flexibility Great app for it's customizability and flexibility. It's not as 'pretty' as some Calendar apps out there, but it generally kicks butt in all other ways. I'll take capability over visual appeal any day.

Brilliant! now I be able to view my Google Business cal and my personal Google call all in one! Excellent customisation to the deepest level. Money well spent!
A Google User, Apr 3, 2013
Calendar and Tasks! I've tried them all and this is the best. Both the calendar and the tasks are clear, easily customisable and simple to use. The programmer responded quickly to my questions. My life has never been so organised

Needs to have settings not so scattered and consolidated in a more logical fashion.... Aside from that there isn't anything to complain about. It is so customizable and rock solid. My most used app. I would pay four times the amount for what it does.

Nice Decent app

Calengoo is the best! Full featured with incredibly quick and helpful support from the developer. Absolutely the best purchase I've made on Google Play!
A Google User, Apr 1, 2013
The most complete calenfar app, BUT It has been turning slower with every update. The interface response times are too slow. Look & feel should be upgraded to holo-compliant
A Google User, Mar 31, 2013
Simply a must have A life saver. Task handling is excellent. On the downside: settings scattered over too many menus and sub-menus, and hardly intuitive, limited support for RTL. But sill, the best calendar app there is.

Google shoud take notes. Used it for a while, initially on an iphone 4s now on Optimus G. Best money invested until now. Use it all the time.
