Summary

Your city is under attack and everyone around you is in a state of complete panic. All the brave heroes have perished in the fight against evil and there seems to be no way out of this hell. You are the only hero left with a last-gasp chance to save the city and of its residents from imminent destruction.

So go out there and use this opportunity to etch your name into history!

Find out what Meganoid is all about in today’s test report.

Features & Use

Section rating:

In Meganoid, your goal is to fight your way through different levels in the city in order to protect from enemy invaders.

At the start of the game, another game character appears telling you that you are the city’s last hope for salvation.

You accept that heavy responsibility and start off on your quest…

At different points throughout the first couple of levels, you’ll receive small pieces of information and advice explaining how the game works. Instead of having to read through a lengthy instruction manual, the game is explained to you in small segments as you play.

It is important to collect all the diamonds along the way in order to earn extra stars (i.e. lives). These diamonds can be very useful the further you progress in the game. Every completed level is automatically saved so that you don’t have to start all over again the next time you play the game.

Personally, I was really impressed with the game’s controls:

You have the option of choosing between different controls.

  1. Use the arrows and jump buttons on the screen
  2. Use the device’s motion sensors to move and touch the screen to jump. This playing mode is pretty useful, but the sensors can be a bit too sensitive to movement.
  3. For devices with physical keyboards: use A/S to run and P to jump.
  4. Same general idea except use S/F to run and J to jump.

You can try out each different type of control by switching between them during the game by pressing the menu button. It’s up to you to decide which controls work best for you.

Screen & Controls

Section rating:

Navigating Meganoid is relatively easy. In the main menu there is only the Play option that automatically starts up your current level and an Options button. That’s where you can adjust the sound and control settings.

You can also access the option menu at any point in the game via the menu button.

All the most important information on the main screen is displayed at the top of the screen. In the right corner there’s the time, the number of collected diamonds as well as the score and the number of remaining levels.

Overall, the game has a very strong retro vibe to it. Everything is done to emulate old school games from the 90s.

Upon completing a level, you are automatically shown your completion time and the number of diamonds and points collected.

Pressing the next button redirects you to a transition screen with the name and map of the upcoming level.

Speed & Stability

Section rating:

While testing Meganoid, I didn't notice any particular problems with the performance and speed. The game loaded quickly and the transitions between the levels were smooth as well.

Price/Performance Ratio

Section rating:

You can download Meganoid for free from the Android Market. There is a small ad banner at the bottom of the screen in the menus.

A nice action platformer When all other heroes are unavailable Meganoid must get into the fray. Unfortunately, he's unarmed and outnumbered... However with a lot of wits and some clever gymnastics he can overcome any obstacles in his way. An action, puzzle, platformer if ever there was one. It has all the megaman spirit and a little bit of cavestory aesthetics, making the environment stimulating and yet not getting in the way of its pits, foes and traps. Meganoid is quite a fun challenging experience not to be missed by retro-game and platform lovers alike.
