nru – which is pronounced near you, get it? :) – is an Android app that helps you find pubs, cafes and other cool locations and venues, well, near you. Think of nru as a helpful radar for places that might be of interest to you and that you weren’t aware of until your friendly Android app pointed them out to you.
As always, you’ll find more details in today’s test!
First impressions—Warning: radar on the loose!
nru’s look is simple and chic: the display is filled by a big radar which, depending on which category you’ve selected, will display points of interest in your vicinity. Click on one of these locations – displayed as dots – and the name and distance to the place will be displayed. It would be great if, along with these details, the app would display more information regarding the location—photos, descriptions and the like would certainly be a welcome addition.
Go to Settings in order to switch between the Metric and American systems of measurement. That’s about all the settings configurations the app has to offer.
nru’s search criteria is fairly rigid: while it’s possible to search for bars, cinemas, bowling places, etc., it isn’t possible to refine the search say, if you’re looking for a tapas bar or a cinema that runs only art house films.
Bottom line:
The app is easy to use and convenient if you simply want to get an idea of what’s out there, but not if you’re looking for an app that will give you more in depth information about a location, or if you need an app with more refined search criteria.
nru makes use of a smartphone’s inclinometer very elegantly. When the Android device is held horizontally a classic radar (with a perspective as though seen from above) will appear; a horizontal view of the search results appears when the device is held vertically. POIs can be clicked on at any time.
The application froze several times while we were testing it; each time we received the same warning message (“Sorry, Activity nru (in application nru) is not responding."), and only after acknowledging this message was it possible to continue using nru.
nru is available free of charge from the Android Market, but additional costs may arise according to what kind of plan you have, seeing as internet connection is required in order for the app to run.
