Summary

A lot of people would argue that the social network boom began in 2003 with Myspace. Others – such as Friendster, Hi5 and Facebook – were soon to follow. They all have one thing in common: to connect you with people you know (or think you know, or want to know…or stalk...).

Miso (as in soup? Seriously, does anyone know how to pronounce that?) runs along the same line, the twist being that it also combines Foursquare and telly!

Caught your attention? It certainly managed to catch mine!

Features & Use

Android-Version: 2.2
Mods: MoDaCo Custom ROM

Miso is the ultimate TV network. If you’re already familiar with Foursquare you’ll know about the ‘checkin in’ function: check into TV shows or films as you would into an actual location. Users can follow each other, comment on check-ins, etc.

Miso is not an Android exclusive—it’s also available for other platforms. That being said, my goal today is to take a closer look at the Android app and let you know what I discover.

When you start Miso you are greeted by the following options:

• Activity
• TV & Movies
• Badges
• Profile
• Friends
• Notifications

The most popular TV shows are display at the bottom of the screen. Although the app does run if you haven’t logged in, it goes without saying that it’s much more fun if you do log in. To do so, click on the ‘Sign-In’ button which can be found in the main menu.

Once you’ve logged yourself in you will see a sort of timeline which includes the newest events (e.g. what your contacts have checked into recently) in the ‘Activity’ feed. If you want to branch out, change your settings from ‘Friends’ to ‘Everyone’; all shows that are being watched at the moment will then be displayed.

Click on ‘TV & Movies’ in order to see which films and shows you’ve viewed most recently. There’s also a ‘Trending Movies & TV-Shows’ feed, which Twitter users will find strikingly similar to ‘Trending Topics’.

Popular shows come with two buttons: ‘Latest Episode’ and ‘All Episodes’. Click on them in order to read through the comments or check into an episode or series.

You can add a number of ‘Badges’ to your profile. You receive the ‘TV Newbie’ badge when you check into something for the first time. The badges that aren’t yet available to you are shown in grey. Click on a badge in order to see what you have to do in order to earn it. Yes, even watching television can be turned into challenge.

You can also view your own ‘Profile’. Profiles are divided into three categories: Activity, Shows and Profile. You can imagine what information will be displayed when you go to Activity and Shows; click on Profile and user information is displayed, e.g. ‘Tagline’, the place from where they checked in, the amount of check-ins they’ve done, badges and more.

‘Friends’ displays the users you are currently following; click on the menu button in order to discover who is following you.

I guess ‘Notifications’ doesn’t warrant an elaborate description—you are notified when you have a new follower, for example. Hit ‘Read All’ in order to mark all notifications as read.

You can connect your Miso account to your Facebook and Twitter in the app’s settings. You can then select if you want check-ins and/or badges to be reposted. And that's pretty much all there is to say about the settings options!

Bottom line:
Miso is an intriguing social network. The app really provides all the functions and featured you’d expect it to have, so if you’re feeling a bit blasé and fed up with Facebook et al. be sure to check it out!

Screen & Controls

Section rating:

The Miso design certainly is easy on the eyes! What a chic looking app! The menu is nice and neat, too. All of the app’s functions can be found by hitting the menu button, giving the app’s UI an overall tidy look.

Speed & Stability

Section rating:

The app runs really fast apart from one exception: the settings, which can take up to 30 seconds to load. Luckily there isn’t a lot that needs reconfiguring…
Aside from this small glitch Miso performs well and hasn’t crashed on me once.

Price/Performance Ratio

Section rating:

Miso can be downloaded for free from the Android Market.

UI is realy old. Well, it works but its a little bit outdated... at least the UI. Also newer features are missing. Please, miso, don't forget, that Android is growing too! But at least it's not a lot worse than getGlue...

Unhappy! No update to miso in over a year for android while the continue to update i/OS. Moving to GetGlue in protest against their android policy!
Mr. Dr. Channels, Apr 16, 2012
Great!
Simon, Apr 13, 2012
Eh. Used this at first for it being the underdog but it has no benefits over GetGlue except not receiving updates and being taunted by iOS updated
Shaina ♥, Apr 5, 2012
Please update!
movieguyjon, Apr 5, 2012
Leagues Behind iOS I see no reason to use this app, especially since the iOS version is dramatically different (see: better) and has a regular update schedule.

No updates Just received this reply: "Hi there, I'm sorry to report that the Android app is defunct. We're working on a solution that would utilize the mobile web instead of an app, so stay tuned for updates! We have some really cool stuff coming out!"
Andrew, Apr 1, 2012
Nice UI, good integration Unsure why I'd choose this over GetGlue, but I'll see how it goes. A bit concerned that the last update was so long ago.
Lawrence, Mar 22, 2012

udflyer, Mar 10, 2012
Needs update I'm not a big fan of hearing about all these"great"updates for iOS and nothing for Android..more people seen to use Get Glue.
yash1229, Mar 9, 2012
Make it like iOS. Redesign it completely & make it like the iOS app. This one is a mess.
Nazreen, Mar 6, 2012
Is there no current updated? Cuz this version is a bit laggy for X10 Mini Pro
