Tower Defense games rose to fame with Warcraft 3, although the gameplay already launched in 1992 with Dune 2, and community maps were featured in Starcraft as early as 1998. Nowadays there are quite a few Tower Defense games available for PC or game consoles, as well as lots of free flash games and apps for Android and co. So what it is about Tower Defense that makes a game enthusiast’s heart skip a beat? Why are they so popular? Aside from ressource activity, what sets Tower Defense games apart from others is that they call for strategic and crafty thinking.
And GRave Defense HD is in a league of its own within the Tower Defense family! The first thing that sets it apart is the fact that it has a narrative. The year is 2022, ten years after an atomic war destroyed the majority of human life on our planet. Only a small group of people were able to seek shelter from the radiation, forming what has come to be known as the ‘Fellowship of Survivals’ (FoS). All other humans and animals either perished due to the radiation, or even worse, mutated into monsters. The FoS has to fight these monsters in order to survive. At the beginning of each new level the player receives a sort of bulletin updating and informing him/her about the monsters and towers that will be encountered in the upcoming level.
GRave Defense HD has a classic Tower Defense gameplay. Different types of towers (minigun, rocket launchers, electric towers, flame throwers, etc.) can be positioned on predetermined locations on the map. The player starts off with a set amount of money, his/her duty being to defend one or several exits/entrances which the monsters must be prevented from reaching. Monsters attack and then withdraw -- the moments between attacks can be used to fortify the towers. There are four upgrades available for every tower. Players have to think ahead so that they can build the right towers on the right location at the right time, and then of course upgrade them when it is best convenient.
GRave Defense HD players can get achievements and different ranks, which makes the game even more interesting. Other cool features: towers change appearance after upgrades, routes monsters will take are displayed and some (numbskull) opponents conveniently drop health packages or money. There are also four levels of difficulty to choose from, the highest of which is a real challenge, in my humble opinion.
Bottom line:
GRave Defense HD is a Tower Defense game at its best. The gameplay might be old news, but it is applied very craftily and spiced up with a few new details. The narrative is also a welcome addition to Tower Defense, even if it doesn’t really impact the game itself. If you’re a Tower Defense games fan you must give GRave Defense HD a go!
Screen & Controls
The ‘HD’ in GRave Defense HD is no joke -- wowee, the graphics are really good, not perfect, but really good, and the image is crystal clear. So basically you get a brilliant looking game which in turn enhances the fun you get get out of playing a few rounds. Controls work well and the menu is kept simple and to the point, displaying a countdown till the next level pack.
Speed & Stability
Price/Performance Ratio
For a short time GRave Defense HD can be downloaded for 1.29€ instead of 2.09€ from the AndroidPIT App center. That’s almost 40% off, and GRave Defense HD is well worth it.

It's a pretty great game -- and I like that it's so tricky, because when games aren't challenging enough I grow bored of them quite quickly...
Thanks for your feedback, everyone!
I really love this game. But it is really tough, though. There is a level now which I cannot finish. It is so tricky...
