'Déjà-vu', 'Doppelgänger', 'memento mori'... Does it ever happen to you that you’re reading the paper and come across a word in italics that’s obviously significant but also very foreign-sounding, and you don’t always happen to have a French/German/Latin dictionary on hand? Or what about when you’re on holiday somewhere lovely and exotic and wind up in a local restaurant ready to enjoy a nice evening meal but can’t make heads nor tails of the menu? A colleague from France sends you an SMS that you can only partially decipher, but can’t for the life of you reply to in French? If any of this sounds even remotely similarly -- read on because we’re reviewing a translation app for you today: StarTranslate.
StarTranslate makes a good first impression: its UI is neat and not too crowded.
First off, you can which language needs translating, and into what language the word or text should be translated. There are 42 languages to choose from, from English, French, German and Spanish to Albanian, Mandarin, Czech, Greek and Russian.
Hit ‘Translate’ and voilà! you’re a step closer to making sense of this crazy world we live in. The app can translate words as well as entire sentences. All translations are taken from Google Translate.
Click on the arrows in order to ‘reverse’ the languages, without having to reenter the languages in the drop down menu.
A very cool function: translated texts can be sent directly as emails, SMS, Facebook or Twitter. Another one: StarTranslate can translate SMS texts for you, including the ones already stored in your inbox. And another: there's a voice to text function.
Looking up definitions for words is also possible. Hit the dictionary symbol and StarTranslate will display definitions (from Wikipedia) on a Google page.
Bottom line:
StarTranslate scores in a lot of departments: its fast and easy to use, getting translation is a cinch and applying translations in other Android apps is also possible. What’s still missing: automatic language detection. This means that users have to know what the language is for which they require a translation (not always a give, especially when the language uses a foreign alphabet). The SMS translation tool is a godsend. As with any translation tool, the quality of the translation (which is literal) can vary immensely; sometimes grammar, syntax and even semantic make no sense whatsoever, or else have to be decoded and then rewritten in order to get an adequate translation.
StarTranslate’s UI is well-structured and using it is quite intuitive. All functions can be accessed directly via the homescreen. Every language is illustrated by a national flag, making languages easier to identify. The only thing that’s truly missing is function for detecting the language.
StarTranslate runs very well: its starts up fast, translations are found very quickly and are displayed promptly. There were no problems with this app during our test run.
StarTranslate is available free of charge from the Market, ad banners included.
