Summary

ConnectBot is an admin tool—plain and simple. That means, it’s not the kind of app that every Android user will profit from, simply because not everyone will feel they need this type of application.

However, if you’re the type of user who wants to be able to access unix servers when you’re on the go somewhere, this SSH client is the thing for you… or is it? Aha, suspense! Read on, all will be revealed.

Features & Use

Section rating:

ConnectBot is a Secure Shell secure shell client for the Android platform that provides users with functions that can usually only be found on network protocols for PCs.

After starting up the app a tips & tricks screen pops up. A useful feature, as it allows users to become accustomed to the programme as well as explain how the remote server can be used optimally, despite the restrictions that come with mobile keyboards. You can then log into your account and use the remote server as per usual. Should you be so inclined you can save your account and login details permantly.

Setting up a tunneling protocol is also an option—slightly unusual but nonetheless useful for a mobile client.

The settings menu satisfies every whim of the ‘mobile admin’. Setting up automatic updates is also an option, firmly establishing ConnectBot in the Android client major league.

Bottom line:

This is a great tool for sysadmins who are in a bit of a corner or simply enjoying the nice summer weather. It's jam packed with useful features including port forwarding, URL scan and key management. It is also actively developed, so we look forward to seeing what esle the ConnectBot fellows are going to come up with.

Screen & Controls

Section rating:

ConnectBot is surprisingly easy to use for an SSH client. That being said, we actually tested ConnectBot on a G1 which, as you know, has a physical keyboard, so that may have something to do with it. Let us know if you’ve used the app on a phone with an on-screen keyboard.

Anyway, using the physical keyboard it was possible to enter long texts into the system, and everything ran really smoothly.

If you have heavy duty, long-term admin tasks even a smart and efficient tool such as ConnectBot will probably not manage to satisfy you, but it is perfect for emergencies or when you need a quick fix. The system really is that user friendly.

The screen and font are nice and big, allowing users to get stuff done without shedding tears of frustration.

Speed & Stability

Section rating:

ConnectBot is fast and smooth—oh dear, that sounds a bit raunchy, doesn’t it?

Connections are set up in a jiffy and the app does what it’s told without hesitation. UTMS makes the most sense, but the remote server can be used with GPRS, too.

Price/Performance Ratio

Section rating:

ConnectBot can be downloaded for free from the Android Market.

Great so far. New to ssh so I don't have much of a yard stick but I was super easy to set up a set of keys for password less authentication.

Not that great anymore The app was awesome 'back then'. Now it could really use a ui and input update. There are consoles with better input and screen handling.

Small text The text is way too small. I would love a zoom function.

Cannot type common symbols Using bluetooth keyboard OR soft keyboard, common symbols simply don't work * $ etc. Nexus 7

Using this in combination with Hackers Keyboard. Works like a charm. With that, MHz good ol' galaxy tab is a very long living portable SSH terminal.

Great ssh client Great ssh client. Some issues with keyboard input, but nothing deal breaking, just takes a bit of getting used to.
Sebastian, Aug 30, 2012
Very good Only caveat is that you have to use ctrl codes to send tab, cursor keys and so on which depends on the remote side interpreting them.

Brill Great little ap

Great! With room for improvement. This app is incredibly useful for logging into servers via ssh quickly on Android. If using an Android laptop or tablet with a physical keyboard, though, not having full use of all of the keys (particularly Shift acting like CapsLock if held down, and not allowing Shift symbols like @ and $ to be entered except through the software keyboard, can be particularly annoying. Other than that, this app is perfect.

Works great No issues in my galaxy S3. Any chance for remembering custom terminal screen sizing or adding a custom default setting?

Fantastic app Used this app to get the MSL on a Samsung Moment a few minutes ago, so I could flash it to Page Plus. Worked like a charm, and a happy customer left my store. Doesn't pull the MSL on my HTC One V, though. Don't need it, however, seeing as though Virgin Mobile uses the same MSL for all of their phones. Look forward to using this again!

Great app, but needs better support for physical keyboards I used and loved this app on my samsung epic 4g with gingerbread, but it is somewhat limited in utility on my motorola photon q. Shift+number always yields a tilde on screen instead of the orange character on the key (I assume some escape code is sent instead of the character), and the tab, capslock and sym keys don't function at all, which makes it really hard to input any non alphanumeric character. Finally, the on screen keyboards (motorola and swype) generate a / when the pipe character is pressed..

Not the best option The lack of a landscape option was the biggest problem and 'force resize' was not very useful. I find Server Auditor a better solution for ssh access

Works well enough, but not tablet ready yet For the most part, this app works very well. I can connect to my *nix machines, do basic admin tasks, and even use interactive software like irssi without a problem. However, many special keys—including the arrow keys—are implemented by moving and/or clicking the device's trackball. While I expect this works fine for most phones, few if any tablets have a trackball to use. That makes things like re-entering commands or fixing a typo difficult or impossible.

Nice SSH tool The app is awesome. I can connect to Linux servers and Cisco hardware. I have one server that needs a special keyboard emulation for Function keys. Would be nice to have a emulation option, ours is SCO.
