The trend for ever-larger screens has one major advantage: large screens make reading on an eBook a much more pleasant experience. Because let's be honest: nobody – and I mean nobody – wants to read a book on a tiny screen.
Moon+ Reader Pro is this week's App of the Week and it's one amazing app.
Find out how Moon+ Reader Pro can turn any Android phone into a portable ebook reader.
I rarely start off an app review with these words, but Moon+ Reader Pro is truly an amazing app. It's definitely in the top tier of Android apps in general. So please forgive me if I sound a bit biased because I just can't say enough good things about this app.
First off, the app has a great simple yet effective layout that makes using the app a breeze. Seeing a greater user interface is a pleasant surprise for an Android app. You'll need just a few clicks and almost no brain cells to navigate around the app.
As soon as you've installed the app, Moon+ Reader automatically integrates any ebooks on your SD card into the app. After that step has been successfully completed, you can download new books from the multiple ebooks catalogs that are preinstalled. Moony, as I have nicknamed it, also features a great search function that can filter your results to your liking. Looking just for American books? Need to find stuff by Phillip Roth in particular? Or searching for a good Kamasutra book? It all works great except for one minute detail: every catalog uses a different search filter with some being better than others. The Guttenberg Project, for example does a much better job than the rest of the ebook catalogs.
You can also use the same search function to browse through your own books. Find ebooks on your SD card with a just a few clicks and the help of your file browser. It's great to see an app that so skillfully combines functionality with complete integration.
As you can tell, I am pretty big fan of Moon Reader+ Pro. Ever since the last update, Moon Reader has taken things to a new level in terms of user-friendliness and functionality.
Just in the standard settings, you’ve got features like day and night mode, automatic screen rotation and the display of the table of contents every time you start where you just left off in a book.
But here are the features that are the real cherries on top: the app can project text in a slideshow like a teleprompter or you can listen to the whole thing via text-to-speech as an audio book.
Obviously, the text isn’t read out loud to you by professional actors, but the feature is still worth a mention.
But the coolest feature of them all in my opinion is the ability to highlight and mark passages in the text. Using this feature you take direct quotes from the text and add them to your notes. You can them translate these passages using the Send to Dictionary feature. This is a godsend for both students and people reading literature in a foreign language. Obviously, all of these features work much better on the bigger tablet screen rather than on your phone.
So what cannot Moon+ Reader Pro do?
The answer is simple: Mobi, DRM and PDF. That may seem like a ridiculous omission given how great this app is, but that’s just how it is. Frankly, I am a bit disappointed because Moon+ Reader Pro would be a perfect app for editing and reading through PDF files.
Bottom Line:
This app can only be highly recommended. Because the app does such an excellent job, I am more critical with the rating. An app as beautiful and functional as Moon+ Reader should be able to support every format on the planet, especially one as popular as PDF. There is, however, hope at the end of the tunnel as the developers have promised to add PDF support soon.
Moon+ Reader Pro reaches close to perfection in this category. Everything is very well thought out and everything just fits together wonderfully. My only problem with the settings is that fact it is impossible to adjust the scrolling speed. Also, it would be nice to see the page follow the motion of your finger instead of automatically flipping every time you touch the screen. Obviously, I am really being nitpicky here, but I just wanted to highlight the fact that Moon+ Reader Pro still has some room to grow.
The reason for the low 3 star reason is the fact that Moon+ Reader Pro crashed three times during my two week trial period. I didn’t manage to figure out the cause behind them, but I still think it’s one force closure too many.
The positive thing is that the app automatically redirects you to the place where you left off every time the app crashes. Awesome!
Another issue: some of the books failed to download on the first try and I to try it three times in a row before they installed correctly.
Moon+ Reader Pro is available for €3.42 from the Android Market and AndroidPIT App Center. A very reasonable price for such a great product.
This week Moon+ Reader Pro is our App of the Week and is available for a discounted price of €1.69. Now that’s an amazing deal all around!

I wouldn't use this app unless I had a tablet. Very happy with Kindle for reading.

.mobi would have been really sweet. Amazon seems to have orphaned the format, even if the Kindle format only have *one byte* changed compared to .mobi.
