Summary

Carcassonne is set in the Middle Ages and you play the role of some sort of blue blooded tyrant who rules the land. It’s up to you to prove if you are capable of ruling–and most importantly that you are better at it than other players!

Features & Use

Section rating:

Test device: LG Optimus Speed / 2x
Android version: 2.3.5
Mods: MIUI

Carcassonne was adapted for Android from a parlour or board game; you can imagine that transforming that kind of game so that it can be played on a tiny smartphone screen is quite a challenge.
The game has two game modes. Let’s take a look at the ‘Basic’ mode first.
The game can be played in horizontal or vertical screen mode. A tutorial in which everything is explained is available for first-time players. I’ve listed the most important rules for you:

You play with others (real players or AI) and you lay out tiles alternately.
Place followers on your tiles in order to gain points.
Every player starts off with seven followers.
Once you’ve placed a follower on a tile you will only get him back when the street, convent or city has been completed.
Whoever has the highest number of followers on a street, convent or city is the rightful owner.
Convents are completed when they are surrounded by landscape tiles.
The area that can be used for laying out tiles expands with every new round.

I recommend watching the tutorial twice just to drill these rules into your brain. Once you feel you’ve understood the gameplay you can go ahead and start playing a round.
The great thing is that you can play against friends as well as AI (change the settings from ‘Computer’ to ‘Person’ in order to do so).
It isn’t possible to change the level of difficulty when playing against a computer, which is unfortunate as this might make things a bit too challenging for new players. (Please not that I read in a few of the Market comments that other players were finding the AI opponents to be ‘stupid’, i.e. not challengin enough.)

The player who begins is selected at random every time you start a new game. Once that’s done every player gets a turn to lay down their tiles. The goal is to claim as many streets, convents and cities as your own.

It is imperative that you don’t lay out all of your followers–if you do it can become an issue when it comes to completing one of your constructions, because you won’t get any of your followers back, which in turn would mean that you can’t collect any more points.

So what does ‘completing’ something mean? Well, it’s different for every map. A city is completed when it is surrounded by a city wall; a street is completed when it leads towards some sort of structure, building, etc.; a convent is completed when it is surrounded by green tiles.

And that’s about all there is to say about this mode. Truth be told, I found this mode to be challenging when I first started playing, but I got the swing of things fairly quickly.

The second game mode is called ‘The River II’. The rules or generally the same as when playing the basic mode, the difference being that you have to lay out river maps as well as the normal one.

Let me say right off the bat that the tutorial for this mode is rather disappointing. My main issue is that it would seem that followers can be played on the river tiles, but I don’t quite get why, and the tutorial doesn’t provide any explanation.

Another thing I found puzzling: sometimes some free spaces will kind of break, making it impossible to lay out any maps/tiles. I’m a Carcassonne newbie and have to admit that I have no idea why this happens. Perhaps some of you old-stagers out there know what’s going on...? If so, let us know in the comments below or in the forum.

There are also 12 accomplishments as well as a few settings options such as setting the music volume and the speed of the animations. The music is really nice and totally helps set the mood.

Bottom line:
Carcassonne is an interesting game and it has been adapted for smartphone in a, well, smart way. If you’re a newbie like me you may also experience some initial confusion as the tutorial/instructions are somewhat below par. That being said, old hands shouldn’t have any trouble with the game.

Screen & Controls

Section rating:

The controls are quite simple–once you’ve understood the gameplay, that is. The controls elements are located near the bottom of the display, an indication that the app was originally designed for older Java phones.

The Carcassonne graphics are reminiscent of an old fashioned board game, and seeing how a lot of users will be used to flashy designs this might feel somewhat boring. The game on the whole feels a bit anachronistic.

Speed & Stability

Section rating:

I tested Carcassonne on a high end smartphone but despite this I experienced some bumpiness in the menu. The game itself runs smoothly, though. The loading times are totally digestible and there wasn’t any lagging or crashing.

Price/Performance Ratio

Section rating:

Carcassonne can be downloaded for EUR3,99 // US$5,46, and because it’s our app of the week it’s on special offer for only EUR1,99 // US$2,72 which is a pretty sweet deal for a pretty great game.

Hi!

According to your question:
"Another thing I found puzzling: sometimes some free spaces will kind of break, making it impossible to lay out any maps/tiles. I’m a Carcassonne newbie and have to admit that I have no idea why this happens. Perhaps some of you old-stagers out there know what’s going on...? i have the following answer for you:

The free spaces sometimes break, because there is no more tile left in the staple that fill fit in this place - it's a strategic operation in Carcassonne when playing agaist each other (e.g. for not letting another player into "your" field or preventing him to finish a city) (the game is using the original tiles from the board game).

Hopefully Exozet will deliver other Expansions of Carcassonne soon...

Great Overall all great app. Continuous spins all placed tiles on Thunderbolt occasionally. Add more expansion please!

Great game but could use some improving Freeses up on the Xoom when music is played, AI doesn't try to steal cities......less clean up then the original. Not optimized for tablet use, could use some expansions. Carcassonne is still an awesome game no matter how you look at it

Fix it I love this game...I have not played it in months, as I am sick of playing the AI's...I want to play live players...I am seriously considering asking for my money back!

Brilliant Love this game. Great fun

Lame AI I wish the computer players weren't so dumb. It would be great to see some of the expansions.

Good port Too bad there are no extensions.

This game rocks! I'd rate it five stars if there was an online multiplayer. the local multiplayer is good but you might as well buy the real boardgame, for it won't drain your battery as much;-) thx anyway.

The AI is soooooo bad!! Seriously!?!! The AI makes such retarded moves, so often, that it takes ask of the fun out the game. You just can't play a real game when the computer players keep doing things like placing road tiles so that they direct into their own cities. Please, please, please fix this rubbish AI. I love the board game, and I want to love this, at the moment I hate it.

Too Easy I'm not very good at Carcassonne. I bought this to get better at it when playing the Xbox live version with friends. I beat the AI on this version by 40 points on my second game. If the difficulty can be adjusted in an update I'll be happy, it's a well presented game but far too easy at the moment.

Great version, fun to play, but phone gets hot (and I mean HOT) when playing. I have fully 3D games on this phone that do so much more and don't come close to the effect this game has on its internal temperature. That's the main thing keeping this from five stars - I can't play the game for more than a few minutes at the time without it threatening to melt my phone, and no game is worth that. Still, a lot of fun to play.

Good but a little buggy Well put together aside from the periodic crashes and quirky animations

Pretty Good! I like how the computer gets to figure out the score! That's super tedious when done manually. I'd love to have this somehow integrate with the actual board game for scoring. Tiles, text, and scores are very tiny on the tablet, then the tiles get even smaller as you play. Graphics are grainy, unimpressive. It all seems too small somehow. It plays fine, the interface is great. Acer Iconia A500 TAB

Could be so much more Carcassonne in itself is a great game, so I love this; however, this could be so much more. Enable us to play networked games, pass and play just isn't sustainable. If I'm in the same room as a friend, we'd just pull out the actual game. Allow us to alter rules, c'mon, who doesn't have their own custom rules? Any expansions?

4 stars if CPU was a little more clever....5 stars if we could have online multiplayer....still great though.
Erik, Mar 22, 2012
Samsung Galaxy Tab Just like the board game. Internet multiplayer and more expansions would make this a 5 star app
Kevin, Mar 21, 2012
Very Good, but needs update Caracassonne, the board game is a family favorite at our house. I purchased this app so I can play it on my phone. The app is good, but scoring graphics could be improved with bigger numbers. A couple expansions would be nice too. And online multiplayer addition like the "..with friends" games would be the greatest.

Pretty decent game But the AI of CPU opponents is really lacking. Also, please add extensions. Will give 5* if those requests are met.
Aldrikh, Mar 18, 2012
Faithfull and fast Very pleasantly surprised on the technical side: - it runs fine on a not-so-fast HTC Wildfire (the animation are not really perfectly fluid, but it's good enough for the kind of game) - it has a very low memory footprint 392 kB (which is always hard to come by on low range phones) Other than that the UI is easy (although, I'd like to be able to move on the map with the pad), and it's exactly similar to the original boardgame

Functional but problematic implementation This is a reasonable implementation of the basic board game. No options to address expansion packs. Only and always 3 players. It is usable on a tablet device, but not optimized for it. My biggest complaint is that the interface for the scoring is nearly unreadable. At the end of the game, numbers appear randomly over the board in a small font. The text is always white, which means it is often impossible to see on top of the play surface if you can find it. There is no way to study how the scores are computed. Another issue is that the AI for the players is pretty shallow. There are 2 AI players and they appear to have identical play styles. There is no provision for more than 1 human player. While this game is serviceable, it pales in comparison to the iPhone implementation. Not worth $4.95, IMHO.
Rich, Mar 15, 2012
Great start, just has few problem areas. It has numerous play breaking bugs (if you place first river 2 tile sideways it kills all over river tiles) and the AI never tries to take enemy landmarks. I would give better rating if graphics are updated from android 2.2 version up to honeycomb devices and such. The UI is also very small and unintuitive on a tablet as accept buttons are in lower corners and have to move hands in awkward fashion when holding tablet to press them. No updates in over 3 months? Really? If this is the case I am a bit ashamed as I've reported numerous play breaking bugs and enhancements if they ever plan to compete with iOS satisfaction. I know they can do it. Until a lot of bugs get handled I cannot rate this any higher.
