Toki Tori is back! Oh yes, this is the return of the Gameboy Color game, now available for Android! Slip into the feathers of a cute yellow chick and protect your unhatched siblings for they are in terrible danger. It’s up to you to save the eggs—and you have a mighty job cut out for you because there are a lot of eggs to save.
Test device: LG Optimus Speed / 2x
Android version: 2.3.5
Mods: MIUI
Toki Tori combines the gameplays of a jump ‘n’ run game and a puzzle. The goal is to use ‘ze leettle grey cells’ as Hercule Poirot would say in order to keep the eggs safe by overcoming obstacles.
The game starts off quite lightly and with brief instructions (in English). Levels can only be completed successfully by using the items provided at the beginning of each level. When you first start playing the only material you are given is stuff to use to build bridges, but there’s plenty of it. As of level two you will only have one plank of wood at your disposition, but you will find that you can still make do, even with limited resources. As you progress in the game, however, you will have to pinch-to-zoom regularly so as to get a bird’s eye perspective (literally in this case, yuk yuk yuk), because you will have to plan ahead to a certain extent rather than just forging ahead mindlessly. You can also use two fingers to have a look around without moving Tori.
Tori has the power to teleport himself, freeze his opponents and more, depending on which level he is in. The levels become more and more difficult as you progress—should you ever find yourself in a real jam you can always make use of the wildcard. You get the wildcard back when you successfully complete a level.
Levels consist of surfaces on which you can walk, surfaces with big gaps in them, ladders and surfaces that are so high up the only way to get there is via teleporting.
You die when you walk into a monster; you can also make yourself die whenever you really can’t crack a level—but the cool thing is that you can die and then simply turn back time, meaning there’s no need to start a level all over again.
This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for—what can I say, I’m tired of getting super frustrated by a game! I play for fun, not because I want to make my blood boil.
The music that accompanies the game is cute and playful and compliments the app’s gameplay and aesthetic nicely. The sound effects are rather squeaky, too—if ever you’re not a fan of one or the other or both you can always turn the sound off completely or selectively.
Bottom line:
There are 80 fun and challenging levels to keep you busy. Toki Tori is proof that old school Gameboy games can make for brilliant smartphone games. It’s great fun and will please users who enjoy puzzles as well as games à la Mario. Toki Tori combines the two elements very cleverly. Yay!
The Toki Tori control elements are quite special. If you’re playing on the XPERIA Play you can use the Gamepad. If you’re using another device you can send Tori wherever you like without actually having to navigate him. In fact, Tori can find his own way more often than not. Tori’s predestined rout is revealed to you before he sets out, meaning that you can interrupt or abort his journey should the chosen route make solving the level impossible.
The graphics are very playful but not lame. Some items are in 3D, including Tori himself. It’s a lively world, what with animals flying about and animated waterfalls. Very nice!
Toki Tori loads quite fast. The animations are great and the game runs very smoothly. Very good overall performance!
Toki Tori can be downloaded for EUR2,64 / US$3,64 from the App Center. Good work should be rewarded and hence I think the price is a fair one.
