I must admit that I couldn’t believe that our AndroidPIT team hadn’t tested Doodle Jump up until now—it is, after all, one of the most popular games on the market. In fact, it was a total cult game for iPhone, and I remember how happy Android users were when Doodle Jump was released for the Android market.
But does Doodle Jump actually live up to the hype? Those of you who haven’t yet tried the game: read on!
Test device: HTC Desire
Root: Yes
Custom ROM: MiUi Android 2.3.5
Doodle Jump is not a complicated game, and that’s what makes it so fun and charming. The game’s protagonist is Doodler, a lovable creature with a trunk, and the goal is to navigate Doodler from platform to platform , by tilting the phone to the left or right. Oh, and scoring points is important, especially so that you can compare them with your friends’ scores.
Of course there are a few hurdles along the way, as well as some power-ups. Some of the dangers you will encounter: weird little monsters and black holes. The latter cannot be destroyed so your best bet is to circumvent them. The monsters can be killed by shooting at them through Doodler’s trunk.
A few tools and the like are also available to assist our brave little friend; items such as coil springs or a propeller cap or even a rocket will help him cover distances faster than usual and without vertigo.
The rocket item only becomes available in the space level; there are a few different levels to choose from.
That's about all there is to say regarding the game itself, but I want to take a few moments to address something I mentioned in the teaser, and that is with how much excitement the release of Doodle Jump for Android was met with. If you've never played the iOS version this may only be marginally interesting to you, but if – like me – you're familiar with the iOS version and purchased the Android version because of how much you had enjoyed Doodle Jump on the iPhone, you too may be somewhat disappointed. But not because the graphics or performance are any less good! No, it's a a question of all the bonus features (level types, Easter eggs and other competitive functions) that are available for iOS users, but not for Android users! And that's just the tip of the iceberg: there are really a ton of features that simply aren't present in the Android version, and it's only understandable that Android users are a bit miffed in this regard.
Bottom line:
Doodle Jump does not allow for multi-player mode, and it isn’t possible to share Doodler related stuff via social networks, either. Two major drawbacks, but on a more positive note the app is also lots of fun to play…
Doodle Jump does well in this category: it has been known to lag a tiny bit, but aside from that it runs really smoothly.
The motion censors react quickly and correctly, and the animation is nice and fluid,
The app’s design has a sweet, child-like and playful look to it.
It sometimes takes a few seconds for Doodle Jump to start, once it does, however, the app runs really smoothly. I’ve been using it for a year approximately and it hasn’t ever crashed.
Only two stars in this category. If you’re paying 69 Cents for something, you kind of except to enter an ad-free zone, and that is not the case with Doodle Jump. But what factors in muhc more is that when you compare the Android and iOS versions you can't help but feel that as an Android user you picked the shorter straw.
