Realism has never been a top priority for Arcade game players—and Assaulter is no exception. Terrorists with giant sabres? Check. Jet-pack-pirates? Check. More explosions than on New Year’s Eve? Check! From the first few seconds of the game it’s non-stop action time, and all the while Assaulter’s narrative is a gripping one (as far as this can be said about arcade games): the goal is to eliminate terrorists.

Choose one of the following characters:

  • Scout: He is skilled with machine guns and assault rifles
  • Sniper: Specialises in snipers
  • Rocketer: Equiped with a missile launcher

All three characters have different abilities: Scout is faster than the others and has 20% more life points; Sniper has 20% more shooting power and 20% armour regenerative power; Rocketer can cause more damage with his 20% more grenades, and his armour can 20% more hits. All that said, seeing as Assaulter is by no means a game that involves a lot of planning or strategy, it doesn’t make much difference which character you pick—it’s just fun to be able to slip into different war crazy dudes.

As mentioned earlier, there’s lots of action from the get-go. You’re basically thrown into the midst of the action the second you start playing your first round. But worry not: all you need do is jump to the left/right, duck and aim. The characters fire automatically.

As of level 2 you will have to skillfully evade enemy fire.

The scenery is good as it’s quite diversified: the Middle East, the middle of the ocean, on a boat, etc. So even if the game (and gameplay) is always more or less the same, there are often new details to look at and become familiar with.

There’s also a good cast of enemies (I like the jet pack pirates best), and at the end of each level you will have to face a boss enemy.
When you finish a level you will often receive new weapons, as well as spend money on new weaponry, armour and upgrades. There are 30 levels in all.

Bottom line:

Assaulter is kept in the style of classic arcade games, set in different locations and ramp-packed with action sequences. There are tons of weapons and plenty of upgrades, but if you’re looking for more than non-stop shoot-outs you’ve come to the wrong place.

Screen & Controls

Section rating:

Classid 2D comic arcade graphics, albeit not quite as pixelated as other retro games. The effects are very well done, especially the explosions. Assaulter’s overall look is pretty good, though I’m not crazy about the ultra-retro looking menus.
Controls are a piece of cake: tap on the left and right sides of the screen to move the characters, tap the character to get him to jump and swipe across the display in order to duck.

Speed & Stability

Section rating:

Assaulter has not crashed me yet, but the game sometimes slows down for a few seconds, usually when receiving an SMS or email.

What Controls? The controls for this game are absurd. There's no "how to play" or tutorial. You're shoved right into a boss fight and need to figure out how to jump, dodge, shoot, etc. quick. There's no buttons for you to press, either.
