Summary

My head is always in the clouds: I get back from doing a grocery run and *slaps hand on forehead* just as I unlock the door to my flat I realise that I’ve forgotten something. Or I meet up with a friend wanting to return a CD I’d borrowed, and there I am empty handed, having forgotten the darn thing at home after all.

I’m sure this type of thing has happened to you as well. Well, that’s where our smartphones come in: to help us dummies keep out of silly situations. Out of Milk Shopping List is the type of app that can help people remember things, so let’s take a closer look, shall we?

Features & Use

Section rating:

Test device: LG Optimus Black
Android version: 2.2.2
Root: No
Modifications: None

Out of Milk Shopping List lets users create and edit various shopping and to-do lists. Details regarding the prices of products can be added, and there’s an integrated barcode scanner that can help making a trip to the store even faster and more efficient.

Out of Milk Shopping List is 3,2 MB in size and supports App2SD. The required permissions are all legitimate.

There are three main types of lists:

  • Shopping List
  • Pantry List
  • To-do List

I’ve created a few of my sub-categories for the shopping list section, but the application comes with two-pre-existing lists: ‘Groceries’ and ‘Clothes’. Creating and editing shopping lists is child’s play: there are just a few buttons and everything is totally self-explanatory.

New items can be added to lists, either manually or by scanning a barcode (for instance, I went shopping, decided to splurge and buy a pack of bubble gum, scanned said extravaganza and it appeared on my list).

The application is very thorough when it comes to specifics: I added ‘bread’ to my shopping list and it came up with a list of different types of bread.
Items can also be crossed off your list as you go, you can add details regarding the quantity of items you need to get (1 beer, 6 beers, same difference) and you can specify whether a price includes taxes. If you regularly enter how much a given item costs you can observe price changes or compare pricing in different shops. Out of Milk Shopping List will also calculate your total amount due for you.

The pantry list also comes with two preset shopping lists for spices and basics, and in order to help make adding new items to either list easier 30 types of spices and herbs and 40 basics are there for you to choose from. Feel free to add more in case you like to keep your lists as clean and organised as your pantry.

The to-do list is very much the same as the other two, except that it doesn’t have any preset lists. Again, it’s easy to create and edit new lists, and in order to keep on top of your schedule there’s an added function that allows you to include dates for reminders.

Currencies and tax systems can be set under settings. Certain settings are only available to pro users.

Bottom line:

Out of Milk Shopping List is a super useful tool for scatterbrains and lovers of well-organised households. The app does everything it promises to do, and does it well. We appreciate all of the attention to detail that went into this application: from the fun design to the quirky app name, as well as the fact that the develoeprs chose to make the application completely ad free!

Screen & Controls

Section rating:

The Out of Milk Shopping List controls are simple and straight forward. We love the design: it’s not too in-your-face, but there’s a lot of attention to detail and – to my mind – good taste.

Speed & Stability

Section rating:

Out of Milk Shopping List is sturdy and fluid. It performed beautifully throughout our testing phase.

Price/Performance Ratio

Section rating:

Out of Milk Shopping List is available for free from the Market. A pro version that offers a few more features is also available. The icing on the cake: the app does not feature any ads!

shared list, prompt updates We tried a few cloud-based shopping lists. This is the one that updates fast enough to be useful for our family. Paid for the "pro" unlocker. As a former user of HandyShopper (Palm), I expect the predictive list. I haven't made use of pantry or to-do lists.

Very Convienent This App is awesome. I love that the paid version you can sync lists with other paid versions. I can assemble our shopping list during my lunch break, sync it to my partner, and he can see exactly what we need. Also, as we run out of items or notice things we need, we can add them to the lists. It makes life beyond easy and trips to the market go twice as fast, since we can split up and still have the same lists.

I use it everyday! I used to keep my phone lists in .doc format so that I could use my computer to edit them. Two of my family members told me about Out Of Milk. I liked the app so much that I quickly purchased it. I love the ease of use and almost instant sync with the web site. By far one of the best apps I've purchased. I've told many of my friends about it and they love it too.

Love this app!

GREAT! I have been looking for a good list app for a long time, and this is surely it. Don't think just shopping lists, think craft supplies, or DMC thread colours, or plants to check out at the nursery. Think outside of the shopping list box :) I love that I can shoot off a small list to people to pick up on their way home, or keep track of inventory. I also love that I don't have to type it all out on my silly phone keyboard. The upgrade is well worth it :-)

Hard to learn It is not one that you can just grab by the reins and figure out on your own. I did not have the time or patience to go online and learn how to use all the lists and how to say what needed to be put on my shopping list.

This is a great app! I have been using this app for a month or two now and I love it. It makes shopping so much easier. I can go in a store with a list of new or previously purchased items and Out of Milk can help me keep track of my purchase prices. I love being able to scan barcodes at home to help bild my shopping list. I have different lists set up for different stores and in order of the stores aisles it's an excellent app.

Lists Easy to use
Samantha, Apr 18, 2012
Grocery Shopping just got a whole lot easier Have tried numerous Grocery app but they required 100% manual entry which can be a bit taxing esp as my touch phone is very sensitive. That it has an integrated scanner which works as well is a bonus. Thank you for all your hard work will be upgrading to the pro version. Keep up the good work.

Amazing app and customer service I love this app and use it every day. No adds, easy interface, and no more scrap paper lists to accidentally wash. When I had a problem that was my fault, customer service was excellent and immediate to reply, exceeding my expectations. I have recommended this app to my family and friends, and now to you too.
Gerry, Apr 17, 2012
Great app Beats paper and pen, or worse, my memory... :) One of the main features I like is that I can enter stuff on my PC, sync it with my phone, and check off as I buy each item.
Dawn, Apr 17, 2012
From computer to phone and tablet! I love this app. I'm able to create my list on my computer and it syncs right up with my phone and tablet. No more lists getting left behind! I even use it for general reminder notes on my tablet. My favorite part is, I can share the list with my husband and make him do the shopping on his way home from work! Woohoo!
