Summary

My head is always in the clouds: I get back from doing a grocery run and *slaps hand on forehead* just as I unlock the door to my flat I realise that I’ve forgotten something. Or I meet up with a friend wanting to return a CD I’d borrowed, and there I am empty handed, having forgotten the darn thing at home after all.

I’m sure this type of thing has happened to you as well. Well, that’s where our smartphones come in: to help us dummies keep out of silly situations. Out of Milk Shopping List is the type of app that can help people remember things, so let’s take a closer look, shall we?

Features & Use

Test device: LG Optimus Black
Android version: 2.2.2
Root: No
Modifications: None

Out of Milk Shopping List lets users create and edit various shopping and to-do lists. Details regarding the prices of products can be added, and there’s an integrated barcode scanner that can help making a trip to the store even faster and more efficient.

Out of Milk Shopping List is 3,2 MB in size and supports App2SD. The required permissions are all legitimate.

There are three main types of lists:

  • Shopping List
  • Pantry List
  • To-do List

I’ve created a few of my sub-categories for the shopping list section, but the application comes with two-pre-existing lists: ‘Groceries’ and ‘Clothes’. Creating and editing shopping lists is child’s play: there are just a few buttons and everything is totally self-explanatory.

New items can be added to lists, either manually or by scanning a barcode (for instance, I went shopping, decided to splurge and buy a pack of bubble gum, scanned said extravaganza and it appeared on my list).

The application is very thorough when it comes to specifics: I added ‘bread’ to my shopping list and it came up with a list of different types of bread.
Items can also be crossed off your list as you go, you can add details regarding the quantity of items you need to get (1 beer, 6 beers, same difference) and you can specify whether a price includes taxes. If you regularly enter how much a given item costs you can observe price changes or compare pricing in different shops. Out of Milk Shopping List will also calculate your total amount due for you.

The pantry list also comes with two preset shopping lists for spices and basics, and in order to help make adding new items to either list easier 30 types of spices and herbs and 40 basics are there for you to choose from. Feel free to add more in case you like to keep your lists as clean and organised as your pantry.

The to-do list is very much the same as the other two, except that it doesn’t have any preset lists. Again, it’s easy to create and edit new lists, and in order to keep on top of your schedule there’s an added function that allows you to include dates for reminders.

Currencies and tax systems can be set under settings. Certain settings are only available to pro users.

Bottom line:

Out of Milk Shopping List is a super useful tool for scatterbrains and lovers of well-organised households. The app does everything it promises to do, and does it well. We appreciate all of the attention to detail that went into this application: from the fun design to the quirky app name, as well as the fact that the develoeprs chose to make the application completely ad free!

Screen & Controls

Section rating:

The Out of Milk Shopping List controls are simple and straight forward. We love the design: it’s not too in-your-face, but there’s a lot of attention to detail and – to my mind – good taste.

Speed & Stability

Section rating:

Out of Milk Shopping List is sturdy and fluid. It performed beautifully throughout our testing phase.

Price/Performance Ratio

Section rating:

Out of Milk Shopping List is available for free from the Market. A pro version that offers a few more features is also available. The icing on the cake: the app does not feature any ads!

Awesome App This app has made my life so much easier. Since I always have my phone, I always know what I need to do, what I need to pick up, etc. I no longer need to jot it down somewhere and then remember where I put it.

Draining battery Since the last update, app runs all the time. I will force it to close and 5 minutes later, it is running again. Completely drains my battery. This was.my favorite app. Now it's just a pain.

Very good and.. Was very happy to come across this app. Works very well on all devices and PC. Unless I didn't figured this out, not all items are recognised by the barcode scanner. Will be nice in that event, to allow entering an item manually (which we can) and then assign a darcode scan to it? This way the app will 'learn'? With that, will have my 5 stars..

Very useful shopping (and packing) list tool Very useful app. Easy to make lists of common items I purchase by store, or by the type of store I go to (e.g. Grocery, Office supply, Hardware). Then when shopping it's easy to check the list and mark as done as each item is put in the basket. The format is a little clunkier than (or different) than other 'list' apps, but gets easier with more use. It's also very easy to use on-line version that syncs with mobile version. And the ability to share lists is also a nice feature.

Great App Easy to Use I've found it pretty easy to get started using it. It's a great app, love the multiple shopping list part and how easy it is to switch my items between them. It's easy to create new categories and you can make them color coded. Easy to add or change prices and to add or change items. If you love organization and simplicity, you're more than likely to love this app.

VERY CONVENIENT! I love this app. It's very easy to add items, edit and check them off. The ability to send the list to my boyfriend is awesome!! Showing coupons/ads from my stores is awesome and helpful. No force closes. Samsung Galaxy S2

Great app I especially like this app for tracking what I have in my box freezer. It is great to just look at the list and decide on what I will defrost for dinner. This is also good for tracking shopping list needs. If you could add the date purchased, it would help to ensure that older frozen items are eaten first. Currently I add this information to the description. the new store adds is quite good, but I still have to refer to the circulars for non food items which is not the best.

Great app. Easy to use with deals from stores near your zip code. Does more than I expected. Highly recommended. Can't believe it's free.

Out of Milk keeps Me from running wild This app has been amazing, since there are 3 of us who share shopping duties, with no rhyme or reason to schedule coordination. We just update the current or special shopping lists and share on our smartphones (an iphone, and 2 versions of Android)...and voila!...the items arrive from anyone of us, with no duplications! And I use the task list for quick, on-the-go note taking of errands to run. Love, love, LOVE this app!

Like it I'd like it better if the same theme applied to the widget

Very useful app I really like this app. It's easy to use. It not only keeps track of what I need to buy, but what I have on hand and what other errands I need to run. And savings at stores in my area too.

Use it all the time. Love it!

Nice app, widget could be better Would be great if the home screen widget could be used to check off or add items. At the moment it seems useless as you have to go into the app to amend lists. Love the voice recognition feature though.

Great, Easy to Use! Great app, so simple and easy to use! I've been looking for something to replace my traditional paper lists and this app fits the bill nicely. I love the speaker and barcode options. Love that I can update my lists on my desktop at work during the day. Whenever I think of something, I quickly type it in and go back to work..it updates onto my phone and, well, Bobs yer Uncle! Love love love it!

Best shopping app I downloaded many shopping list apps. Some needed a degree to figure out how to use them. Some had so many levels, extras, uses, that they became too complicated to use. This app does what is says in a no nonsence no frills way and is therefore the easiest for a busy person to use. Can I give more than 5 stars please?!!
